As part of Sony Group Corporation’s (Sony) Road to Zero plan, we have made several commitments to improve our environmental performance: addressing climate change by 2040, conserving resources, controlling chemical substances, and promoting biodiversity by 2050.
How Sony Interactive is addressing climate change
Sony is committed to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by the end of fiscal year 2040 (FY40) from an FY18 baseline. This includes direct emissions from our sites (Scope 1), indirect emissions from purchased energy (Scope 2), and all other value chain emissions, such as manufacturing and product energy use (Scope 3).
Our targets are approved by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi), which is a globally recognized body that enables businesses to set emissions reduction targets in line with climate science.
Near-term targets
- Reduce GHG emissions at Sony sites globally by 72% by FY35
- Reduce absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions covering use of sold products 45% by FY35
- 10% of suppliers by emissions covering purchased goods and services will have science-based targets by FY25
Long-term targets
- Reduce absolute Scope 1, 2, and 3 GHG emissions 90% by FY40

How Sony Interactive is Reducing Energy Consumption of Consoles
Reducing product energy use is essential to achieving our targets, as the electricity consumed in users’ homes represents between 69% and 77% of total annual GHG emissions. Our interim target is to reduce GHG emissions per product sold by 13% by FY30.
For PS4, we introduced System-on-a-Chip architecture, power scaling, die shrinks, and deeper energy-saving modes over the lifecycle. These changes reduced PS4’s estimated energy use by ~50% from the launch model (2013) to later revisions (2018 onwards).
For PS5, we introduced more advanced technologies including the AMD Zen 2/RDNA 2 chipset and improved power management. At its launch in 2020, PS5 drew less power than PS4 in rest, media, and navigation modes—for instance, drawing <0.5 W in Rest (with no other features enabled), whereas PS4 drew 1.8 W. However, its enhanced capabilities result in higher power consumption during play.
While further opportunities to reduce PS5 power consumption are limited due to technological constraints, we continue to develop novel solutions to further reduce energy use in day-to-day operation in support of our GHG emissions reduction targets. These include new energy saving features such as Adaptive Charging for peripherals in Rest mode and a new Power Saver for games setting that can scale back gameplay performance to reduce power when enabled by the user for supporting games.

Game Streaming and Network Services
We estimate our game streaming service, content distribution networks (game and patch downloads), and network usage represent less than 1% of our total annual GHG emissions. We work with the data centers housing our game streaming servers to ensure they work towards the latest efficiency benchmarks and encourage them to transition to renewable electricity wherever possible.
Inspiring action on climate change
Climate Station uses the latest gaming technology to allow players to view, interact with, and understand complex climate data to raise awareness about climate change. The application tells the story of climate change through three acts: Weather Year, Observations, and Projections. There’s also an Explainer Library to explore.

How Sony Interactive is conserving resources
Plastics
Replacing virgin plastic in consoles remains challenging due to material performance, manufacturing efficiency, and supply chain constraints. We continue to explore opportunities for use of recycled plastics and reduction of plastic in products. Our target is to limit virgin plastic use to 30% or less by total weight for our consoles FY30.
Durability, Maintenance, and Recycling
Ensuring our consoles are reliable, durable, and can be repaired efficiently contributes to minimizing our resource use. We provide maintenance guidance and certified refurbishment service for our consoles. Through this process, we collect data to improve our consoles’ reliability and have reduced return rates by up to 80%.
For end-of-life, we ensure key components can be safely removed and recycled through non-destructive disassembly. We label major plastic parts with material information1 and provide guidance to recyclers and repair partners to encourage reuse and simplify recycling.
How Sony Interactive manages chemical substances safely
All manufacturers and suppliers must meet Sony’s requirements and legal standards limiting hazardous substances. For example, our batteries and screens are mercury-free and we do not use halogenated flame retardants in console casings.
How Sony Interactive is promoting biodiversity
We engage with our suppliers to raise awareness of biodiversity issues related to electronics supply chains. We also undertake various initiatives to promote biodiversity awareness within our employees, gamers, and the wider gaming community.
In 2022, we launched Aloy’s Forest alongside Horizon Forbidden West, an initiative supporting programs to conserve ecosystems. Together with our PlayStation community and partners, we are supporting reforestation projects worldwide and exploring new ways to use our technology to restore ecosystems and promote biodiversity. Environmental management at Sony Interactive’s sites
Our manufacturing facilities and sites with over 1,000 staff are certified to ISO 14001, an international standard that helps companies reduce their environmental impact. For our other main sites, we are working toward achieving targets to reduce energy consumption, monitor greenhouse gas emissions, and promote water efficiency and waste recycling.
