Solano County Library History

Solano County Library was established by the Board of Supervisors in 1914. The library operated in several locations before moving to its first permanent home in Fairfield at the corner of Union and Texas streets in 1931—now a historic building adjacent to the County Administration Center. Solano County is also home to a historic Carnegie library in Dixon that continues to serve the community today.

Over the years, cities within Solano County joined, left, merged, or affiliated with the County Library system. Today, Solano County Library serves six of the county’s seven cities—Dixon, Fairfield, Rio Vista, Suisun City, Vacaville, and Vallejo. Benicia operates its own library but partners with the County Library to provide a shared online catalog and digital resources for residents across the county.

From five libraries in 1990, the system has grown to nine locations. Today, Solano County Library provides welcoming spaces, access to technology, diverse collections, and programs that support learning, connection, and opportunity for the communities it serves.
