First thing's first: I am ex-military and a contractor for a security company. Now before you got thinking I'm some ex-Green Beret, Special Forces, blah, blah who runs around doing covert missions out of a Tom Clancy novel, I'll set the record straight. I signed up with the Army in 2005 to be a truck driver; yes, a truck driver. The recuiter was offering ten grand for infantry and twenty for truck drivers. I was young, dumb, and that sounded a lot better than running around, covered in mud, getting shot at. So I took the bait and, silly me, didn't realize why they were offering so much for a cushy job.
I was in Iraq in 2006, right before it all got really bad, and found out. Insurgents don't like to attack people that can attack back; they like to attack supply convoys. My convoy got caught in a nasty ambush that left some of my friends dead, a bunch wounded, and me with a concussion and a compressed spinal column. A purple heart and a medical review board later, and I was back in the civilian world with a permanent disability check. Little under two years driving trucks for the Army isn't great job experience, and then I stumbled in the world of security contracting.
Everyone thinks that it's Blackwater hunting Osama in the mountains, but really it's a lot of what I was doing before, running supplies to bases. A few white lies on my application and I was hired on with Last Stand LLC, a small start up that barely knew what it was doing. It was a gold rush in Iraq for contractors and they weren't too picky about who they hired. I don't work with SEALs and Special Forces; I work with L.A. SWAT team members trying to pay their morgage, small town cops looking for a better paycheck, and other military burn outs. I managed to become a crew lead, mainly by virtue of the more senior guys quitting or getting killed.
Back home I don't carry a million weapons or live in a secret cave. I have a nice downtown apartment and have one pistol that I keep locked in a drawer, the bullets in the closet. I can't bring myself to get a concealed carry permit. On my off time I enjoy back country hiking/backpacking, working on completeing the Applacian Trail, and of course video games. First person shooters lost their luster a while ago, and I play a lot of city building games or RPS. I am currently medicated, rotating between three different anti-depressents, going to the next when the one I'm on stops works.
I'll keep posting, so whisper me if you want to chat.
