WARNING: THIS CHAPTER DEALS WITH A SENSITIVE SUBJECT BUT NOT IN A GRAPHIC WAY. YOU ARE LIKELY TO BE SHOCKED BY IT
After winning in the eighth week, Birch loses it when he finds Grizz backstage with Dipper. Stargazer has a private talk with Birch, and the secret comes out.
-----
The secret revealed in this chapter was one of those things which, once I decided to do it, I realized I had been hinting at since the very first chapter. I actually did not want to do it, but...well, artists know this phenomenon--you make a decision to do something, and the character rebels and tells you not to do it. This was similar. I was thinking, "I can't saddle Birch with this." and in the back of my mind I heard Birch shout, "DO IT!!" I then asked him if he was sure, since it was a very heavy burden. He said he was willing to bear it. So, I checked with attendees of the streams I had been doing. They all said to do it. So, I did it. I wrote up the script, read through it again and again, until I felt I had it right, then recorded it. Recording Birch's part took more out of me than I have ever had taken before. I was spiritually drained by the end. I vowed I would never do it again. Then, last spring, after I got some absolutely incredible vocal performances from the voice actor who did Grizz (he was not the original voice, I was) I decided to redo this. This chapter is still twice as long as any I had done previously, and it still took one heck of a lot out of me to record. None the less, it stands today as my greatest triumph in story telling.

P.S. This is a very haunting chapter and I really appreciate how it really makes one think of their own demons. We may not think about it but there there. It's quite a challenge to figure out whether to poke it with a stick, possibly angering it, or to slowly pick at it through some type of expression :|
And yeah, this chapter was designed to tear your heart out.
Keep listening to the story as it unfolds. If anything, this chapter made them stronger than ever, since Birch no longer had to carry the burden alone.
if Dipper was only in the next room, I hope he didn't wake up during all that though. It would be very confronting to the cub.
Star did very well to handle the situation so calm and caringly. Turning the handle on that jack in the box, requires a great deal of discretion and tack to help support Birch through the curtains being flung open to reveal such a deep dark secret.
Well done in handling this chapter so well.
