Oh, and first comment as well........
Been depressed over the loss of Mark Merlino. Never met the man, but he was certainly instrumental in the development of today's furry fandom. He remained an active fur all of his life.
Also came across the tragic story of 'Tim' Horton. Other than a stellar career on the ice, and his roll in starting the donut chain, he pretty much had a very sad life, beginning to end.
Yes, playing in the era of no helmets was hard on many hockey players, and Tim Horton suffered more than most. I met him once, at a promo for one of the early coffee shops. They still made the doughnuts in-house in those days, not like today where they are shipped in frozen from god knows where.
The franchise is right across Canada with even small towns having two or more outlets, They have been creeping south through upper state New York, New Hampshire and Maine. Do they have Timmie's (as they are referred to here) in Connecticut now?
As far as coffee, here in New England, it's Dunkin' Donuts (Now simply Dunkin' or DD). The best coffee and even a decent bacon sandwich. The donuts were great, but like TH, they took donut making out of the locations. There's one central kitchen in an industrial park. There are literally so many that you can't sling a dead cat, and not hit one. Same with+ Subway. Best donuts are still Krispy Kreme. Southern Chain, that still rxists in CT at the Mohegan Sun Casino.
I forget which chain it was, but they were offering 6oz burgers in competition to the 1/4 pounder, which is only 4oz when you do the math. Unfortunately people were convinced that 1/4 pounder was bigger than 6oz. and they had to find a new angle, like putting real meat in the burgers (as opposed to 100% 'beef', which can technically come from any part of the cow)
The only two things I ever get from McD's is the coffee, because I kind of like it these days, and the breakfast burritos, because they are addictive. And that's only on the occasions where I have to get out at 6:00 am to take the grandkid to skating practice, about once a month.
We have Dunkin's here too, and a few other chains, but none of them make any really good doughnuts anymore. I avoid Timmie's too, mostly because I find that their coffee has an aftertaste I don't like, although many swear by it.
A&W? Had one on the corner, where I worked during law school. Real onion rings made fresh. It's where I got into the habit of dipping them in ketchup.
Harvey's (flame grilled Hamburger place) was popular when it was small, now they grace the entranceways of Home Deport and other sordid spots.
Swiss Chalet Chicken keeps growing, although they often co-locate with Harvey's now. It's hit or miss depending on the restaurant quality-wise.
But ... what is this 'church' thing you speak of?
Having a huge drop in temperature today. it was 45 F when we left to go to the dog park after lunch and its 19 F now, on its way down to 3 F. High winds and blowing snow too. Fourth winter has arrived.
Trying to hammer out a settlement for a Monday trial.
I'm about to embark on a campaign of wrath and intimidation on a company that has wronged me.
Revenge exacts the highest price on the one who seeks it.
Even my friends say that I'm a vindictive bastard when I'm wronged.
One of the best was when a fellow who was once my abusive superior reported to his new assignment only to find me sitting behind the desk saying "Remember me?" He expected the same treatment that he doled out when he was the boss, but I did nothing, letting him go day by waiting waiting for the ax that never fell. It was delightful.
Our warm spell has been postponed, Extreme Cold Warning in effect here today. But the sun is out and there is no wind so we took the dogs out for a run anyway.
Nice driving all along that string of lakes from Montreal on down.
The nice weather is on the way, but still not here yet. Forth Spring (and hopefully the last) is due on Friday. Getting used to sub-zero living again meanwhile.
Weather is not there yet. On and off rain, dark, damp and 45. Got one new client today, so that was something.
I do long for a nice Cuban cigar occasionally.
We did see a stage production of Shakespeare and the Beatles last night though. It's a production of 'As You like It' set in the '60s with Beatles music to move the story along. It was hilarious.
