He is a basket case, though. I'm glad he's getting help, but it doesn't sound like he's being honest, and it's going to be a very, very long road otherwise. At the end of the day, it sounds like he is dangerous right now, and should not be walking free. From a story perspective, though, it's very realistic behavior on his part - not just the lying, but also the instant fear of Wally's reaction to his contact with the other child and the inability to believe that Wally's plan to get to Birch will work.
