Hassan the Camel: A Reflection on Orøstrand (2010)
Title can't be empty.
Title can't be empty.
This photo captures Hassan, a majestic camel resting comfortably at Orøstrand, taken on April 13, 2010, with my Canon PowerShot SX20 IS. Hassan is part of a group of animals that found refuge at Orøstrand, and his presence carries a deeper story that connects to the sanctuary's history and my own journey within it.
Orøstrand was more than just a petting zoo to me; it was a significant part of my life. I lived at this treatment home in the 90s, and later, I returned to train as a zookeeper under the guidance of experienced mentors. The animals here were more than just residents; they were companions in my journey of learning and growth. One of the most crucial lessons I learned during this time was the importance of respect and awareness when working with animals, especially those with a complex past like Hassan.
Hassan, along with two donkeys and possibly a few ponies, was rescued from an abusive situation. While the details have faded over the years, I remember that the animals came from a seized operation, potentially a circus or farm where they had endured mistreatment. The police reached out to Orøstrand, offering these animals a new home, and we gladly accepted them into our care. Hassan, in particular, was known to be dangerous, and entering his enclosure was something we did with utmost caution.
One thing that stands out in my memory from my time at Orøstrand is the importance of being alert and aware, especially when around such animals. I used to listen to music while working, which is fine in a general sense, but I would often have it too loud, making it difficult to hear if another zookeeper needed assistance. This was a valuable lesson in safety and attentiveness, particularly when dealing with animals that can be unpredictable and potentially dangerous.
My love for animals is deeply intertwined with my passion for photography. Even back in 2010, with a camera like the Canon PowerShot SX20 IS, I was capturing moments that reflected my connection with these creatures. The camera, with its 20x optical zoom and versatile capabilities, was ideal for documenting life at Orøstrand. It allowed me to capture the raw and genuine interactions with the animals, even those like Hassan, who required a cautious approach.
The story of Hassan and the other rescued animals at Orøstrand is a reminder of the sanctuary's role in providing a safe haven for creatures that have suffered. It also highlights the importance of understanding and respecting the animals we care for, always keeping in mind their backgrounds and the potential risks involved in working with them. This photo, and the memories attached to it, serve as a testament to the powerful connection between humans and animals, and the responsibility we bear in ensuring their well-being.
