Alone in the Woods
Title can't be empty.
Title can't be empty.
? New Song: “Alone in the Woods”
An experimental song regarding an innate desire to wander and explore the beauty and serenity hidden within the forest. Not all who wander are lost.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This song is regarded as “experimental” because, some time ago, I attempted to write a song using the Locrian mode. I don’t fully understand how modes work, and while I believe they’re usually used as a way of supplementing and improvising over the overall scale, I wanted to make a song focusing on this one mode. Further emphasizing how little I know about modes, I believe this song was intended to be made in one mode but resulted in Locrian. I don’t fully remember. I just know the previous name of this song used to be “Locked Up”. The key is B Locrian which is a mode of C Major… I think. The time signature is 7/4. Using both of these aspects, I wanted the song so sound mysterious but whimsical, as well. It’s titled “Alone in the Woods”, not for any sad reasons, but for a more curious and exploratory reason. Not all who wander are lost.
The lyrics came afterward, filling the emptiness and repetitive nature that the song was becoming. Since this song was experimental, it started mostly as an expression of that concept – make a song in a specific mode only – but, I was really enjoying the vibe that this song was taking on, so I wrote some lyrics. To make the song even more mysterious, I added what’s known as “5-lets” to the lyrics (like a triplet/tuplet or sixlet/sextuplet, 5 equally-spaced notes in one beat) which can be heard as the final line of each stanza. I will admit, it was a bit hard to sing for me going from the 5-let to the eight notes, so I tried to edit the timing a bit to make it more accurate, trying something new, you know? Not all who wander are lost.
The last note I want to point out is how the vocals are… pretty much all doing different things. I wanted to emphasize the mystery in the song. The lyrics are cryptic and esoteric, the music uses a lesser-used mode in a lesser-used time signature, and the vocals are all doing whatever they want but still generally in unison (and there are 10 vocal tracks). The harmony came last. There were 4 parts each doubled up; I sang the same part in 4 octaves. I wanted to add some subtle harmony, so I added one more stack of vocals with a harmony I also just experimented with. Not all who wander are lost.
Lyrics:
Disappear
Deep within the trees
Fade away with the shadows
Wondering where it will lead me
I must see
All its mysteries
Bewildered by its wile
Yearning for solidarity
