Messerschmidt Me163 Komet - USAF Museum 04-18-2017
Title can't be empty.
Title can't be empty.
I The Komet was meant for point defense against Allied bombers. It was very fast (max. 595 mph with test runs in the 600-700 mph range reported) and had a high rate of climb (16,000 feet per minute) but could only fly about 50 miles. It also used a fundamentally unstable propellant. From the USAF Web site:
The motor used two fuels -- hydrazine hydrate in methanol, plus concentrated hydrogen peroxide -- that ignited violently when combined with a catalyst.
Anyone who knows about hydrazine knows you do not want to use it.

The fact sheet reports that this particular Komet was likely sabotages during production by slave laborer(s).

(For those not aware of it, hydrazine reportedly smells like flowers and will kill most people essentially immediately if you can smell it.)
