Ready For Love

Title can't be empty.

So, part of my assignment for my voice lessons this year is to write a song every week.

There are two scary things about that. First is that I've never before now written lyrics, or even attempted to. Second is that everything that I've written up to this point has taken me a substantial amount of time (like, a whole semester).

Anyway, here's the first product of those labors. Apparently it's good, because the staff accompanist immediately put it on the next General Student Recital when she heard it the first time. This is a recording of me singing and her playing in said recital. Let me know what you think!

Now that's what training sounds like. It's not the X-Factor, American Idol or The Voice, but that's what an artist sounds like. This is not about telling a sniff story about your adoptive mother, but it's someone musically talented showing off what you've learned...and earned. Nice! :P

It's art, it's meant to be enjoyed - both when you make the art, and when someone experiences pleasure out of it. And that's all there is to it. *smiles*

Schönberg and Webern, among others, would beg to differ; but I agree with you. What use is art without someone to look at/listen to it? As "pure" as some might call such, it's utterly pointless.

My theory professor/advisor/friend jumped all over me when I said that I cater to the enjoyment of the people that will listen to my music. I think it really comes down to the fact that many classical musicians and academicians in that field are pretentious (though that points the finger rather severely back at me :P).

Well, I suppose there's also the genre of art for the sake of art - seemingly pointless but for the fact that it exists, or that it was made. Why not? But music is different from the visual arts in that on the most fundamental level, it has to happen to be appreciated. And someone's gotta first make it, and then someone (including the maker) receives it. *chuckle* But that's probably just my very tired ramblings :P

You'll make someone very happy, singing them to sleep each night!

Nice little torch song (or "torchable" at the least), well-presented, beautifully expressed. You're more than ready for musical theater, with those pipes, sonny! And greater things await as you pursue your craft. You continue to impress me.

weird, i thought i already watched you. . . well that problem is fixed. Your voice is absolutely amazing as well as your editing skills, keep it up at this pace and you'll rule the world (not entirely sure what the correlation is between those, but yeah)

Things like this make me wish I'd stuck to voice training when I was younger. Quite lovely. The chord progression you use around 1:00 - I don't know the specific music theory terminology, but that ascending minor - has always been one I particularly liked.

I used to write song lyrics. It's quite tough. Like poetry, but less forgiving, it has to 'build up' right, and there is very much a right and wrong place for something to be. Hope it goes all right for you.

I think you're talking about the flat-9 in the D7 chord on "fare". I like that chord, too. I use a lot of modal mixture like that (mixing notes from the minor scale into the major to make fun noises!). As far as lyrics go, I've still got a long way to go. I literally just started attempting to write them about a month ago. I tend to make a stab at writing the words and then refine them as I'm working through the music.

I found lyrics often demand quite a lot of inspiration - I can sit down and work on a story almost all the time, but it's hard to just sit down and write song lyrics. For me, at least.

Heh, I'd love to! My main problem at this point is lack of easy access to vocal recording equipment. Up to this point, I've just taken advantage of the few recital recordings I have of me doing my own stuff (which, this being a classical school, is the only time they'll really let me do jazz on a recital). Since I've been writing these songs, there's been talk of a larger recording project; but that would be of my own stuff. I'll see what I can come up with, though. Maybe my roommate can "borrow-without-asking" a mic from the studio or something.

What I've heard so far is great, so I'll definitely look forward to hearing more, in any form. *smiles*

I've listened to this several times… and every time I listen, it grows on me. And I liked it the first time, so you may assume I'm loving it by now. >;3

Are you a tenor or a light baritone? The only reason I ask is that your lower notes here have a slight baritone-ish tone to them while having a brighter tenor quality on top.. I knew someone like this misclassified for years at my old school as a tenor when he had almost a whole unused octave on the bottom of his range that he never got to use till he started retraining with his coach with that in mind.

Believe it or not, I usually sing baritone or bass when in a choir situation. I do sound rather light and clear, but the highest note in this song is an Eb, so it's easily singable. On a good day, I can go from a Low G to a high G, so my range isn't huge and it's pretty squarely in the baritone range. Unlike many baritones, my money range (tessitura) sits in the upper part of my register.

I'm really glad you enjoy the song! I'm surprised this song has been as popular as it has, considering it's the first one of its kind that I ever wrote. Can't say I mind, though. :P

I suppose not. I just get irritated because I can't sing really high and I can't sing really low. I'm kinda smack-dab in the middle. Works for me, though.

Well, if you're considering going pro, you'll always have a job as a countertenor. Opera companies can't get enough of you guys.
