Our Student Supports Specialist is responsible for the overall administration of the education program for students with special needs. This includes but is not limited to collaborating with resource room, guidance, mental health, speech therapy, classroom teachers, educational assistants and other team members to support and ensure that instructional programs for identified students are meeting individual student needs. Additional responsibilities include fostering inclusionary practices at the school, overseeing assessment and referrals for students and maintaining special education records.
The Special Education Program at Sturgeon Lake supports students who have disabilities or challenges that interferes with their learning. The program aims to educate students according to their individual differences and needs. This involves every child receiving an individually planned and monitored program in an inclusive classroom setting that allows them to meet their educational goals.
Interventions to support children to achieve a higher level of personal independence can include differentiated instruction, adapted equipment and materials, accessible settings and specially trained teachers.
Special education can include a range of support services, depending on the needs of the student. Services can include physical assistance and therapy, counseling, modified learning environments, assistive learning devices, or educational and psychological assessments.
Brian Zimmer is the Student Supports Specialist with the Sturgeon Lake Education Alliance since April 2020. Having worked in the field of special education since 2005, Brian’s current position involves the supervision and mentoring of Sturgeon Lake Central School’s educational assistant team, the overview and planning of the special education program in collaboration with the special education team and training and supporting the Alliance’s partner communities in areas pertaining to special education referrals, students with exceptionalities and professional development needs.
Brian’s particular educational interests include supporting the professional development of educational assistants, assessment, reading instruction, and modifying and adapting for students with exceptionalities. As a special education consultant, Brian can offer services and/or workshops in many areas of special education including, but not limited to, special education assessment, promoting inclusion for children with exceptionalities, disability awareness, modifications and accommodations for students with exceptionalities, RTI, educational assistant training, supports for social-emotional learners and IEP programming. Brian is a certified trainer in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention and Life Space Crisis Intervention.
