I first came across Lily Lolo a couple of years ago, just as the mineral make up hype was taking off in the UK. I wanted to try mineral foundation but didn't want to order from the US. I had ordered many other mineral items from the US, but this time I didn't want to wait 3 weeks for my order to arrive. A Google search put Lily Lolo at the top of the list so I popped over to their site and had a look at their foundation.
The site is very easy to navigate. There is a menu on the left hand side of the front page listing each of the products. The foundation page has the foundations split into 4 groups (neutral, cool, warm, olive), with two buying options at the bottom (sample jar for £0.99, full size for £12). I think the "add to makeup bag" option, rather than "add to cart" is rather cute! As I wasn't sure which I needed, I ordered samples of the two lightest from the neutral and cool sections.
My order arrived 2 days later, which I was very impressed with. It came in a bubble envelope, along with an instruction leaflet. I tried out the colours straight away. And I hated it. It looked chalky and cakey. I wasn't impressed so the whole lot went in the bin.
Fast forward to about 6 months later, I had read up more on how to apply mineral foundation as the method is not the same as regular foundation. I decided to order again to see if it was the makeup or just my method that made it look so bad. I also ordered a "proper" brush (a kabuki, I had tried it with a synthetic foundation brush). The foundation arrived first and I had to wait a couple of days for the kabuki.
This time, I moisturised 10 minutes before applying foundation. Previously I had just applied to bare skin. Also, the kabuki helped immensely! I "buffed" the foundation into my skin, rather than applying it as a layer over the top. I applied very small amounts and built up a couple of layers.
The result? Well, I couldn't even see that I was wearing foundation but my skin looked healthy and even. A slight change in application made a huge difference to the result. The next day I ordered the full size jar. That was around a year ago. I've used the foundation about 3 times a week and the jar is only looking about half used.
Once on, it doesn't feel like I'm wearing anything on my face (as opposed to the slight weight that I've noticed with liquid foundations). It's pretty transfer resistant, but not 100% - just ask the white lab coat I wear to work! However, it transfers much less than any other foundations that I've tried. I'm not prone to breakouts, but I do have some slight oiliness. I have noticed much less shine on the days I wear this foundation.
I'd go as far as calling this foundation a "holy grail" item (a term many makeup addicts will be familiar with!). I've sampled foundation from many other sites and only been impressed with one other (but that's for another review).
I wear the "Candy Cane" shade.
