To activate or launch the program simply navigate to the accessories then ease of access folder. Within the ease of access folder you will see the speech recognition application.
However to properly calibrate the speech recognition system you need to navigate to the control panel and select the speech recognition button. From there you will have five options to choose from.
They are:
To start speech recognition
- This simply starts the application nothing more.
To set up your microphone
- This takes you through the steps needed to configure your microphone to work properly.
To take a speech tutorial
- This is self explanatory it helps you the user to speak in a manner that would be better recognized by the computer
To train your computer to better understand you and last
- This is a means by which the user can’t remove the PC to recognize and better understand the user’s voice pronouncing of words.
To open a speech reference card
- Launches the printing of a physical list of common commands so that the user can keep it with him at all times, this means he will always know what to say.
I have written this entire article using nothing but a handheld microphone the total time took about 18 minutes. This time however includes me navigating through the menus to make sure what I was saying was right.
Very few times did I have to use the keyboard only occasionally to make the odd delete and correct punctuation other than that I simply spoke slowly kindly gently and patiently the at the computer.
I found it best to hold the microphone about 1 inch away from my mouth. Occasionally despite this some letters were difficult for the computer to register. Especially the letter “a” the computer often confuse it with the letter E or the number eight so in some instances the editing became a bit tedious and somewhat frustrating nonetheless at this event and this article was well interpreted.
I must say that as a new user to the windows speech recognition software on my computer I’m impressed by this feature. I firmly believe it is one of the most underutilized features of the windows operating system.
What even surprises me is that it is not limited to just the dictation of words but also helps with the mouse less interaction with your PC. By simply saying the item you wish to select you can choose what function that to perform.
For instance if you simply want to get to my documents simply say start and then say documents then it brings you to the documents folder and from there you can simply say the name of the folder and when it is highlighted you can simply say enter and it will open the file or folder.
To be quite honest and this is going on a lot longer than I thought I did not expect to be dictating for so long it’s as though you have the ability to produce your thoughts at almost the same speed that you are thinking it is simply amazing that the speech recognition software is able to keep up I honestly cannot stop thinking of things to say because the software is keeping up with my speech at the very moment with no hesitation and absolutely well not absolutely but little to no mistakes this is this the incredible, the reason this sentence this, paragraph has no punctuation is because it is one continuous thought that I have continuously spoken to the microphone and to the PC in extension without pause.
And do you know the PC has kept pace to the very end and continues to add this line as I speak across screen.
I highly recommend the use of the windows speech recognition software it is beyond a doubt one of the most underrated yet the most useful practical, worthwhile pieces of software included in the windows package. Certainly you must use it because everyone has a Windows not certain if MAC has this. You see I just can’t stay quiet I just have to keep talking.
