From Sketching User Experience

  • An Approach Design called ” Participatory Design” in which the lay-person is an active and essential participant in the design process. Participatory design adheres to an ethic of “Designer as Facilitator”. In this case, the role of a design professional is to work with the users/ customer as kind of combination coach/ trainer. to help them come to an appropriate design solution themselves.
  • The Anatomy of Sketching, the early sketch is important because it invites suggestions, criticisms, and changes. It used for communication. The next stage in the design software for more refined new ideas.
  • 作者也在文中定义了什么是skecth: Sketch is quick to make, when needed, cheap, to throw it away, the context of a collection or series, not tight and precise. The appropriate degree of refinement.   Mind ( New knowledge) —->create —-> Sketch (representation) —> Read —Mind
  • 5种不同的rendering:Sketch, Memory Drawing, Presentation Drawing, Technical Drawing and Description Drawing.
  • ” The best way to good ideas is to have lots of ideas”.
  • ” Sketches dominate the early ideation stages, prototypes concentrated at the later stage where things are converging within the design funnel. The sketch is evocative, suggest, explore, question, propose, provoke, tentative and noncommittal. The prototypes are didactic, describe, refine, answer, test, resolve, specific and depiction.
  • If you did not do your best to anticipate the technical, social, and commercial ecology within which your product must live through its entire life.

Design talk

Series 1 Airbnb Lead:

  • “Not many people know design is more than what you see.”
  • How to convince non-designer to understand your low fidelity ideas”.
  • “How Airbnb thinks about the implications of its UX in the real world ” Airbnb Pixel perfect很重要,但是pixel perfect 怎么去transfer time and place也是非常重要的。Context of the use.
  • Storytelling in Airbnb through prototype, user journey, storyboard ( user’s challenging, gain empathy, identify themselves).
  • The design is a problem-solving process.
  • “Only Designer in the team, how do you convince value of design”. —- See process, help them to see the value of user research, storyboarding of the user journey.

Be ok and open mind,不要怕犯错误。

Wonderful Weekend

周六的中午和Xuanzi 一起explore最近很有名的一家resturant Carthage Must Be Destroyed.

Design Challenging

Background Stories

Apparently, iPhone 16GB storage is a reasonable price for the students like me to afford it. However, I never clean my device or transfer document until last minutes when I can not take any pictures anymore. So how to solve this dilemma? How can I always have enough space on my phone device? How can I manage the thing in my phone effectively?

Understanding

I started to compare and analyze the current alternatives way to approach this problem.

  • Deleted pics, apps or music. ( I can not delete everything, I do not have time to manage and decide which single things to delete)
  • Buy 32 GB, 64 BG phone ( Price consideration)
  • Dropbox, iCloud, Google Drive (Get confused, overlapping ?)

Also, I compared the phone storage with computer storage from external, internal and functions perspective. Originally, laptop and desktop have a larger space comparing to the iPhone. Also, we tend to use to portable hard drive, dropbox desktop or Google Drive desktop to save and transfer our important file from our desktop or laptop. It seems like more natural and convenient to transfer and organize documents on the desktop.

Comparative Analysis

I searched online and interviewed a few friend about the same problem and their usual solution. The purpose of interviewing with users is to validate the two main alternatives I listed before. Although there are many available flexible storage plans on the current market, people are still suffering and facing the low storage at the phone.

  • How do current products in the market deal with this problem?
  • What is user flow of each of them?
  • What are these highlights of them?
  • Why these features do not work out?

Dropbox

I dropbox a lot on the desktop devices. It seems like the flow of mobile is little complicated than the desktop version. I clicked add icon- click the type of documents- Microsoft file. Can I one-click drag into dropbox? yes, but it will turn out like the left screen on the below. It seems like messy and unorganized.

iCloud

Through iCloud, users can upload photos, video, documents, and music. We can also access it across all the Apple devices. It is a power and strong design solution. iCloud have photo library, iCloud Drive, and family sharing. Do the users need to make a decision every time they want to free space on their device?   The biggest problem of iCloud is security issues and slow speed on the transfer of large files. Once the users agree to connect with iCloud, the system automatically syncs all the pics together. The users have less control to manage and organize the pics through iCloud.

iSO

iSO have it own way to clean and release storage. The traditional user flow is:

  1. Go to Settings → General → Storage & iCloud Usage
  2. Click “Manage Storage” under the “Storage” header
  3. Look for specific App in the list of apps
  4. Amount of storage used
  5. You only choose to delete this App or keep it.

Ideation

Based on the previous research, I summarize a few assumption for the further design process.

  • On Time: informed in the head of time to make an action
  • Maximize Convenience: simple to drag and manage documents like desktop application instead of multiple steps to click and upload
  • Multiple Steps to manage: Manage App through General Setting, Manage pics in different place.

Sketches

The primary task of manage storage should help the users to reduce their cognitive load. Based on the mental model they used it now, they can finish all the steps of manage storage under ” Manage Storage”. They do not need to switch in here and there.

The design solution focus on:

  1. Checking multiply storage software status and delete overlapping information
  2. iSO list the App that have not be used for a while and deleted in a group.

面试Coach

NYFW 2016

Yesterday, I went to see the NYFW 2016. To honestly, I was surprised by it. It is was my first time to see any fashion in person. Fashion, New York, and trend are all far away from me. Every girl has a dream about a fashion designer. I felt I am so close today. This year is extremely stressful and bad. This is last year on the school. I am on the way to change from student to employee. I feel it is extremely hard. But it is a great process to learn myself and do something I never did before. It is also a process to learn knowledge, to practice design skill and shape a mature personality.

Reading

Two book read recently.

Design For How People Learn

“A successful learning experience does not just involve a learner knowing more-it is about them being able to do more with that knowledge.”

“Change is process, not an event. You absolutely cannot expect someone to change based on single explanation of the new practice. They need time and repetition to ease back on the old habit, and start cultivating the new one.”

I feel the book exactly describes my current status. I made many mistakes before. I alway want to change myself instantly or want to master something in a short period of time. I have not realized learning is a long journey. We have to enjoy the moment on the way.

Touch Time -Brainstorming

Brainstorm

After exploring three weeks to think what I want to make, I finally decide my final concept. In the initially stage, I explored many possible options and ideas. I realized I want to create something with deep and board thinking like dark, mysterious and eternity. I want to create an immersive experience for the viewer and led them to explore the space. I find some similar current installation online. Here is a collection  of my brainstorm and exploration.

Concept

I want to create a visual circle like clock to run automatical running on the table or on the screen. If our audiences make a series of certain behaviors, the running clock world will be stopped first and then destroyed.

Purpose

The primary goal of this project is lead our audience to explore the space and think about the time transition. Think about who we are in the past and where we are going on the future. How do the people feel the time transition.

Target Audience

Due to the limit timeline, the target audience of this project will be the college student who feel they have nothing to do on the school. Specially, this project target to the people who do not have a sense to appreciate their time and use it effectively.

Tools

Max.MSP, Processing, Arduino

Acrylic, LED lighting.
