Shuddhashar Internship

Shuddhashar Interns develop their interests in social justice and socio-political knowledge of different regions and are empowered to contribute through research, concept development, outreach, social media, writing, and editing. Shuddhashar Internships are only for motivated, responsible, and independent thinkers who want to make a difference.

Summer 2025

Virginia Bonnie is a rising third-year Echols Scholar at the University of Virginia, where she double majors in Computer Science and Modern and Global Studies. She is a student fellow of the Democratic Futures Project, an organization working to foster collaboration across activism and academia. In her Modern and Global Studies program, Virginia researches the impact of fiction and poetry on pro-democratic thought and theory. When she’s not doing any of that, Virginia enjoys reading, painting, and creating video games. She is an Oslo Scholar Program intern.

Summer 2025

Ella Perrin is a sophomore at Tufts University studying Environmental Science, Anthropology, and Spanish. She grew up in Durham, North Carolina, and was involved in local climate activism and environmental education. After spending her first semester studying in Urubamba, Peru, she solidified her interest in the ways that climate change impacts local storytelling, community relations and connection. Her time abroad expanded this interest on a global scale. On campus, she spends her time community organizing in local activist spaces and particularly enjoys using art—both collaborative and personal—as a point of connection and transformation. As an Oslo Scholar with Shuddhashar FreeVoice, she is excited to expand her understanding of journalism as a global change-making tool.

Summer 2025

Ifrah Hasan is a first-year student of International Relations at Oslo New University College in Norway, with a growing interest in international affairs and diplomacy.  She is driven by a deep curiosity and a desire to learn through unique experiences and new challenges. She also enjoys exploration, whether it’s hiking in the Oslo area or traveling abroad. Her most memorable destination has been Singapore, which sparked her interest in multicultural societies and international affairs. She is passionate about amplifying voices that are often overlooked, understanding how society impacts people’s opportunities, and contributing to meaningful change.

Summer 2025

Evan Vezmar is a rising sophomore studying international relations and French & Francophone cultural studies at Tufts University. Originally from Minneapolis, Minnesota, Evan has a passion for journalism and human rights. He has worked at various journalistic positions, from being a managing editor for his high school paper to being a staff writer on the Tufts Daily. Evan also wrote as a freelance writer for a local newspaper in Minneapolis. As an Oslo Scholar, Evan attended the Oslo Freedom Forum where he met notable human rights activists, leaders, and writers from around the world.

Summer 2024

Will Flintoft is an undergraduate at Harvard University studying Philosophy, Linguistics, and Applied Mathematics, with a deep interest in AI and the law. Originally from Melbourne, Australia, Will works as a research assistant to two computational neuroscience labs across Harvard Medical School and the School of Engineering and Applied Science. When he isn’t in the classroom or at the lab, Will sings and tours with his a cappella group the Harvard Krokodiloes. Will is an intern through the Oslo Scholars Program (OSP).

Mahalakshmi Gururaj is an undergraduate student at Sai University in Chennai pursuing a combined major in Literature, Cultural Studies, Communication, and Creative Expression while minoring in International Relations. She values interdisciplinarity and is intellectually fascinated by social media spaces, post-colonial studies, Queer literature, and Sociopsychological analysis (Laura Mulvey’s theory regarding Visual Pleasure and the Male Gaze is a favourite!). Mahalakshmi is an intern through the Oslo Scholars Program (OSP).

Summer 2024

Teagan Mustone is an undergraduate student studying International Relations and Civic Studies at Tufts University. She is interested in human rights, neocolonialism, and their ethical applications. Teagan’s passion for educational justice has led her around the world from an elementary school in Urubamba, Peru to a medium security prison in Massachusetts. Teagan is excited to explore the intersection of art and activism.  Teagan is an intern through the Oslo Scholars Program (OSP).

Summer 2024

Maria Martinez Meza is an international student from El Salvador, currently studying International Relations at Tufts University. From 2021-2023, she lived and studied in Tanzania, where she discovered her passion for working towards social change in internationally-minded spaces. She enjoys travelling, learning languages, and engaging with people from different cultures. She enjoys immersing herself in unfamiliar cities, intentionally getting lost to explore new places and meet new people. Maria is an intern through the Oslo Scholars Program (OSP).

2022

Samaya Anjum is a journalist and researcher focusing on technology, human rights, and migration. She completed her studies in Politics and Government from Sciences Po Paris and Trinity College Dublin.

Summer 2022

Michael Pecorara is a Junior at Harvard University studying Economics with a Secondary in Government and a language citation in Mandarin Chinese. Michael is involved in a number of organizations on campus: he is the Deputy Director of US-China Initiatives for the Harvard Undergraduate Foreign Policy Initiative, the Chief of Staff for the Harvard Intercollegiate Model UN Team, an editor for the Harvard Undergraduate Law Review, Finance Director for the Harvard Association for US-China relations, and a member of the John F. Kennedy Jr. Forum. In his spare time, Michael enjoys listening to music and visiting museums. Michael plans to pursue a career in law, specializing in international law and constitutional law. For Shuddhashar, he contributed to researching and soliciting articles, especially for the special issues on Undocumented and Cultural Genocide. Michael was selected as an intern through the Oslo Scholars Program (OSP).

Summer 2022

Aisha Catena is an undergraduate student at Tufts University studying English and Civic Studies and interested in human rights and activism. For Shuddhashar, she assisted with social media and contributed to researching potential writers for the special issues on Undocumented, Cultural Genocide, and Intimacy. Aisha was selected as an intern through the Oslo Scholars Program (OSP).

2020-2021

Mbali Hlubi is a South African writer passionate about writing to make a difference in the world and raise awareness. Her articles address social issues relevant to the African continent. Mbali studied at Furman University and graduated from Rhodes University with an Honours degree in English. She is fond of the arts and enjoys public speaking, music, literature, and traveling. She enjoys learning about global cultures and philosophy, and she values researching, raising awareness, and imparting knowledge to others about her continent of origin, Africa. Mbali began as a Shuddhashar Intern in early 2020 and then became regular contributor to Shuddhashar’s themed magazine issues and the essay section.

2019-2020

Drew Davis is from Orangeburg, SC and graduated with a BA in Religion from Furman University in 2021. Tastefully problematic and naturally inquisitive, Drew is interested in aesthetics and illuminating marginalized stories. Drew contributed several articles to Shuddhashar and played an important role in developing the issue on Body Politics.

Summer 2018

Mary Meisenzahl is a retail reporter at Business Insider covering fast food, restaurants, and labor. She has previously worked at Shuddhashar, Boston Magazine, and the Berkman Klein Center at Harvard. Mary was selected as an intern through the Oslo Scholars Program (OSP).
