SHP2GPX is a straightforward utility that converts ESRI Shapefiles into GPX files for use with GPS devices and mapping apps. It reads standard Shapefile components (SHP, DBF, SHX) and, when available, the PRJ file to interpret the source coordinate system. The output can represent point data as waypoints and line data as routes or tracks, making it easy to move GIS layers into navigation and fieldwork workflows.

Key capabilities:

  • Converts Shapefiles to GPX for use in navigation software and on GPS devices
  • Handles point and line geometries (e.g., points to waypoints, lines to routes/tracks)
  • Uses the PRJ file, if present, to reproject coordinates to WGS84 (EPSG:4326), the GPX standard
  • Keeps essential attribute information such as names and descriptions where applicable

Typical use cases:

  • Preparing field data for handheld GPS units
  • Sharing GIS features with outdoor navigation apps
  • Exporting survey lines or trail networks as GPX tracks or routes

Notes:

  • Ensure the SHP, DBF, and SHX files are present; include the PRJ file for accurate coordinate handling.
  • GPX is a WGS84-based format; data in other coordinate systems should be reprojected accordingly during export.

SHP2GPX is developed by SHP2GPX. The most popular version of this product among our users is 2.1.
