LJ Cards

I have a virus or food poisoning, so you get to read about what I've been doing in between trying to work at home, to deal with bill-collectors on the phone, and to practice for the Olympic tryouts (sprinting to the bathroom):

Sharrainchains in Control Ought Delete
In this compelling travesty, sharrainchains (Gwyneth Paltrow) is an elite FBI agent with a three movie deal. She promises to protect ivorydamsel (Salma Hayek) before the seemingly innocent mizbuffy (Halle Berry) gets to her. With guns blazing, she sneaks into Mizbuffy's submarine, twenty-two days too late. This picture tells a thousand words. Most of them are interjections.

WWLD? - Birth of an Action Heroine!

So, it's the middle of the holiday season, and yet again our heroine has received the coolest gift from one of her dearest non-LJ friends, J: The Action Heroine's Handbook. Armed only with this book, her motto WWLD?, a video of Mystery Men, a little brains, and a little talent (with the emphasis on the latter), our dauntless heroine seeks to create her new superhero identity.

Watch her this year as she reaches the awe-inspiring moment when she realizes the true extent of her superpowers. How will she balance the Fire Goddess/Water Nymph sides of her secret identity as a hapless Bridget Jones / mild-mannered Anne Elliot Singleton? What actions will she take over the coming year - beyond toughening up her LJ styles and adopting the motto WWLD?

Tune in next week for answers to these questions in "WWLD? - A Superheroine's Diary..."

Persistence of Memory

A friend asked, "Suppose you could take a pill to selectively forget things.... Then again, would we lose the strength that suffering brings, keep repeating mistakes, and lose all the discipline that pain incurs?"

Interesting questions! Is it the memory - rather than the experience of - suffering that teaches and strengthens us? I don't think there is one answer: it probably depends on what we are learning. Bodybuilding physical exercise is one example of a situation in which the memory of the pain is unrelated to the physical growth achieved: one could easily forget the hours of exertion and retain the stamina and muscle growth. Of course, most lessons and growth probably are dependent on memory. It is almost axiomatic by now that those who cannot remember history are doomed to repeat it, right?

Now I am trying to figure out which lessons and growth don't require the memory of the pain that helped birth them. Does it make a difference if we add the distinction between conscious and subconscious memory of pain? Hmmm. Mental gymnastics are good...

I am sanguine and almost a hero...

And I always thought I was the Melancholy type of babe...

Now if someone could just explain some of it to me: pocky? Shounen-ai? Of course, I probably would sleep through the appointment (my mother still hasn't forgiven me for sleeping through the PSATs in high school) -- it's simply another instance of the eternal dilemma: save the world or finish my beer?

Purely Sweet and Joyful Note

If this works, a mouse in a coffee cup will sing "Jeremiah was a bullfrog ...."
