What is Shadow the Scientists?

Based at the University of California, Santa Cruz, Shadow the Scientists (StS) is a one-of-a-kind program that offers immersive, real-time virtual learning experiences each month for students of all ages. By providing rare, behind-the-scenes access to STEAM professionals as they conduct research and related work, StS aims to spark interest in STEAM careers and help participants build the foundational skills and confidence needed to thrive in those fields. In addition to student-focused programming, StS also hosts sessions open to the general public to foster broader awareness, appreciation, and support of scientific research.

Our sessions are interactive, with questions and comments encouraged throughout. Participants both witness and take part in the experience as scientists problem-solve, navigate technical challenges as they arise, and share the excitement of seeing new data arrive live, along with the scientists’ real-time reactions. Check out our YouTube channel to explore previous sessions.

Shadow the Scientists is made possible through a generous grant from the Heising-Simons Foundation.
