Nicola WatkinsonI have been providing sensitivity reading services professionally since 2020, working directly with authors, as well as with editors. I have been hired by editors at Penguin Random House (US), Penguin Random House (UK) and various subsidiaries, and Bonnier Books (UK). I read for the following subjects: physical disability, in particular CFS/ME, fibromyalgia, chronic pain/fatigue, and generic disability/ableism themes; neurodivergence, in particular Autism/Aspergers/ASD, ADHD, and generic neurodivergence themes; mental illness, particularly OCD, PTSD, anxiety & depression; queerness, particularly lesbians/queer womanhood, and trans/gender nonconforming identities. As someone with multiple intersecting identities, I’m well placed to advise on the depiction of multiply marginalised characters, and on general nuances of intersectionality which can often be missed. My work has been consistently highly praised by editor and author clients, and I find it incredibly valuable and meaningful work. I am conscientious and pride myself on my ability to catch small details as well as to consider the overarching narrative of a project in my reports, and I always provide relevant resources and suggestions for authors wherever possible. As a writer myself, I’m considerate about language, style, and tone and make sure that any suggestions I make are in keeping with the project’s overall aims and aesthetic. I’m happy to have longer discussions where needed to facilitate more complex projects, and will gladly make myself available to editors/authors/agents for follow-up conversations over email or calls if that feels right for the project.nickyjwatkinson.co.uk

Drew HubbardI set up Pride Reads in September 2021 as a monthly newsletter and resource for all writers, writing lgbtq+ characters and stories. Along with my newsletter, and social media tips and advice, I also offer sensitivity reads and script reads for people wanting help with their queer characters and stories (either cishet writers needing queer eyes, or queer writers needed a queer reader who wouldn’t question queerness like some cishet readers do, especially when it comes to scripts).
I’ve done several paid (and free) sensitivity reads since then, all with very good feedback, and with clients who are returning with new projects.

I also specialize in reading broadly for the ways that other historically marginalized groups are represented in a text, providing feedback on the ways that dominant (and oppressive) cultural narratives are present in the midst of those portrayals.

Re GwaltneyI am a working sensitivity editor with over 3 years experience, and have worked for traditional and indie authors alike. I am a vendor for Penguin Random House Canada as a sensitivity editor, as well. I draw from lived experience as well as a Bachelor’s of Social Work to edit on the following subjects:

– Disability and Chronic Illness
I am disabled with multiple conditions, including POTS (dysautonomia) and EDS (hypermobility) and several pain disorders. I have ten+ years experience dealing with the medical system, as well as navigating social and physical spaces, grappling with shame and major transitions, and contending with human dignity and self-worth as an individual that much of our culture erases. I also read and work in Disability Justice spaces and can edit on many axis of disability.

– LGBT+
I am bisexual and demisexual, and plugged into the LGBT community in my local area. I have lived experience plus formal education on the treatment and experience of LGBT youth and older adults, and the challenges faced both within and without our community.

– Gender Identity (Trans, Nonbinary and Genderfluid)
I am Nonbinary and Genderfluid, and am active within trans spaces. I can discuss transitioning, gender confusion, changing relationships with identity and body, uncertainty, the medical system, violence toward our community, and trans joy.

– Polyamory
I am polyamorous and within community with polyamorous people as well as prone to reading extensively on the subject, complexities and realities. I can help dispell common myths about polyamory, explain various relationship systems, and explain current discourse on topics such as decolonizing and hierarchy controversies.

– End of Life and Hospice Care
I have worked in the social work office of a hospice care facility, working closely with staff, patients, and patients’ families in order to provide quality care and face sensitive moments of grief and end of life. I have worked on quality assurance in the complaints systems and followed up with families when challenges and conflict arise. I have spoken with dying patients and interviewed family about their parents’ stories. I have also learned about end of life laws and protocols common in the US and my state. This allows me to speak compassionately on the reality of death and dying in hospice spaces.

– Autism/Neurodivergence
I am autistic, and was also formally trained on autism in academic and treatment contexts in my social work degree. I shadowed work with autistic children during my Undergrad career, and hold community with many autistic people as an adult. I continue education on autism research and cultural discussion, including common myths and exploitative stereotypes. I can speak on the disconnection between more communicative or low-support autistic people and those with high support needs who are not as well handled by the system. I can discuss autistic joy, communication differences, meltdowns, and the many difference expressions and experiences that people can have on the autism spectrum.

– Abuse, Trauma, and PTSD
I am an abuse survivor, have experience trauma and its fallout and continue effects in life, and have lived with cPTSD for my entire life. I also made trauma and ‘abnormal’ (as it was called then) psych an education focus in my BSW, and have continued to follow research and understanding since then.

– Mental Illness
Similar to above, I have lived with mental illness struggles all my life and also devoted a great deal of my education to understanding how it works and effects those involved. I have knowledge on depression, ptsd, anxiety, personality disorders, and more. I am careful when receiving a request for edits on a specific mental illness to assess whether it is within my ability to assist with, and will decline a job if I’m not confident.

– Amnesia
