My new intro post (holy cow the last one mentioned AIM and MYSPACE) [13 Sep 2013|11:12pm]
Hi, I'm Carl.
I don't get around this place as much as I used to.
To put it quite frankly, I've been neglectful.
Its the attention whore in me, FB is where its at.
BUt sometimes, I have thoughts that I can't share on fb. Not for the drama or the 100+ comments posts it'll cause (we all know I love those), but too many circles, sometimes you just need to be able to express yourself and not worry about stepping on 30 toes. (esp since family is on fb)

And I have many great memories here. Ive met a lot of great people. A lot of growth.

If you don't know me, I'm Carl.
Im a bit rough around the edges sometimes, went from being a sailor to corrections to a bouncer/nightclub manager, to um, tech support.
I used to have a very interesting life, now its rather boring. But I still can tell a good story.
I try to be open minded about things, but when it comes to issues of equality, I don't have much tolerance for the intolerant. I'm a Texas liberal.
Love my guns, let everyone marry, dont intrude on womens rights, do your best to pull yourself up but don't begrude the helping hand that many need from time to time.

I love photography. Anna Kendrick. Game of Thrones. Cooking. And BABY OTTERS.

If you're wondering over from FB feel free to add me, I like new friends.
If you're wondering in from somewhere else, say hey, introduce yourself. I like new people.

****Friends Only**** [08 Aug 2015|06:25am]
I used to be an open book. But I'm a bit off the cuff, raw around the edges, and I've felt the need to have at least one barrier to my public thoughts.

I like making new friends, but I warn you before you enter:

I'm politically motivated, and therefore, I talk politics a lot.
My life is insane and drama - filled. To some appearances its a trainwreck - so this journal will come across as such sometimes.
I'm not as angry as I seem in some of my journal entries - its venting and spewing which helps me stay sane.
I post a lot. If you've got 4 friends on your friends list, you'll probably get tired of seeing me all over your friends list.

I do sometimes put my foot in my mouth. Don't we all?

If you're here because you've seen or heard about my photography, feel free to add my journal over at carljspeedphoto.
Its the pretty photos, the discussion of techniques, etc - without the drama trainwreck of my personal life.

If you've got a Myspace, feel free to hit me up: myspace.com/sdx or myspace.com/carljspeedphoto
Model Mayhem : 70608
Aim : spdravenx

And if you're going to add yourself, or would like to be added, please take a moment to introduce yourself, and what brought you here.
Namaste!

Racism, Butter, and Why Anne Rice Can Go Fuck Herself [23 Jun 2013|11:25am]
We've all heard about the Paula Deen thing.
I didnt get too angry. Racists in the south, its not a real surprise. Paula Deen, in a legal deposition, sworn under oath, admitted to some racist behavior, and is accused of a lot more. Story steamrolled, reached critical mass, Paula Deen saw the writing on the wall in 96 point IMPACT, and made a weak apology. And FoodNetwork did the right thing, and opted not to renew her contract that runs out in a month. I was ired enough that I wouldnt buy anything Paula Deen, but things were going like they're supposed to.

But then, the tides of AWP rolled in. Every minute on the FoodNetwork fb feed, there's another AngryWhitePerson post, outraged at Paula Deen's dismissal.
And then the rage came.
So many people completely oblivious of privilege.
So many people, clueless as fuck to the idea that apologizing when you're busted, means that no one should take any punitive action against you.
So many people, dismissing the racism as its just a casual expression of her environment, oh she's not one too blame.
So many people, incapable of reading, believing she's being crucified for some use of the N word she let slip 25 years ago.
So many "they get to say the N word, why can't we?" entitlement arguments.

And then my mind got blown.
Ive actually told people to follow Anne Rice's page lately. She seems fairly progressed in some of her views, and shes very involved on her fb page, I've received a few comments replied to from her myself. It was an interesting chance to interact with an author.

And Anne Rice, esteemed author, weaver of words and of the symbolism and power that they hold, equates Paula Deen being fired, to a "crucifixion" and a "lynch mob". Despite multiple protests from fans who point out that "lynching" is what was done to black people in history, (where they were found hanging from a tree, or in later years, dragged behind a pickup truck), and that using that term to defend a white woman who had admitted acts of racism is not acceptable, Ms Rice continued. She essentially victim-blamed the defendant, and implied she shouldn't have been offended because the defendant in the lawsuit against Paula Deen and her brother, were white. She bleated sympathy for Mrs Deen, who made the grievous mistake and bad judgment of confiding in a white woman and lamented that the woman's sheer motive was money, she couldn't have possibly been offended at the hostile work place. Paula Deen's firing was the cause of smug hypocrites, not people who were justified in being upset at her blatant racism. She then told people who have been the target of racism, what wasnt racist and what "true racism" is.

Fuck Anne Rice. Im going to get a book of hers, and I'm going to soak it in charcoal lighter fluid, then I'm going to burn it on the grill, and I'm going to film it. While reading many of the various defenses were by people who couldn't display a 7th-grade comprehension of English and grammar, Ms Rice is educated, accomplished, and not stupid.

I think former President Carter was a jackass for his recent comments that most of the attacks/opposition against Barack Obama is racially motivated.

Race certainly plays a role in some people's opposition and vehement attitudes towards Pres Obama, there's no doubt of that.

But there is still a significant number of people that are against some of his policies (and not just Obama, but Reid/Pelosi/etc), that have decently constructed arguments (I just don't necessarily agree with them).

What former President Carter did was widen the divide.
For those that oppose the President's agenda that are being labeled racist, they're going to get angrier because they feel you(whoever) are trying to invalidate their points and accuse them of something pretty deplorable.

And its only going to get them angrier and more riled up.
I know plenty of conservative crazies.
But one of the biggest opposers to Barack Obama's policies is a friend of mine who is rather smart, well thought out, and black. And he's livid with people not being able to disagree without being called racist.

If people want to say there's racism immersed in some of the attitudes against the Pres, very few can disagree with that.
If someone wants to label a whole group of people (conservatives/right wingers) as racists like Jeanene Garolfolo and former Pres Carter did, that's completely ridiculous and counter-productive.

My friends, on my birthday, I have a humble request [10 Aug 2009|02:29pm]
I've had lots of help when things got bad, and I'm trying to pay forward when I can. Right now is one of those situations, where a friend of mine really needs any help he can get.

My friend EricT, otherwise known as shadist, formerly known to those of you present in the old Brutal Honesty days as "Crpg_empusae" or "the guy with the fish icon who is always arguing with Yoder", has had personal tragedy strike, and I'm horrified to have seen this happen to him in real time.

Eric's been moving into a new place with his girlfriend, and things have been going seemingly well. Last night her ex bf requested she go over to talk so he could "get closure".
An hour later she was text message breaking-up with Eric. (yes, that song popped into my head when I read the entry).
Eric was pretty upset - his last words had been to tell her how much he loved her. Now she was breaking up with him, he was going to have to find a new place out of the middle of nowhere.
Its not new hat, Eric's a great guy but manages to get his legs kicked out from under him in the years I've known him, far more often than should happen.

He couldn't sleep, so he left the house before work this early morning.

Only to find out later, by the police, that she never texted him.
Krista's ex-boyfriend shot and killed Krista last night, then burned his house down with her in it to cover it up.
He then texted Eric, and went to Eric/Krista's house and burned that down too (luckily Eric had left and was not there)
After that, he went driving, went off the road by the dam, pulled out a gun and killed himself.

http://www2.nbc4i.com/cmh/news/crime/article/homicide_detectives_called_to_house_fire/20662/

I'm really heartbroken at this, that Eric has had to go through such tragedy, and such a violent twist of emotions.
Its so fucking twisted its almost surreal, you know? Its one thing to read about George S on the telly, its another thing to see the events unfold in real time to someone you call "friend".

In addition, most of what Eric owned, including all his clothes/etc, were in that house and were burned down.

****************************************************

I know times are tough.
But if you've got $5, $10, or whatever, please consider donating or purchasing a photo.
I'm willing to sell any photo I have, at the prices I've listed +$5 (photos can be seen at http://carljspeedphoto.livejournal.com and http://www.flickr.com/photos/sdx76 ) , and donating the proceeds
to Eric. ($25 - 8x10, $35 - 11x14)

Eric has set up a paypal account but can't attach a card to it right now so I'll be forwarding all the donations to him (I'll post screencaps if there's any worries of accountability).

Please Paypal @ carljspeed@gmail.com, note "EricT" in the donation.

Thank you for anything you can possibly do to help.

I had the strangest nightmare about jameth last night, which is strange, because I think Jameth is pretty cool.

But I had this really weird dream that we were arguing about something, and I said something really mean to him.

I woke up in the morning, and opened my door to find piles of poo left steaming everywhere all over my bathroom, including a pile in the toilet that went up like a makeshift tower of Babel-poo.

My mirror was smeared "jameth's fan club" and "F U SD-no seX"
For some reason the hazmat team came, cleaned everything up, and was asking me who to send the bill too.

And it ended there.....

I dont remember my dreams too often, and sometimes when I do, they make no sense whatsoever.

If you truly consider yourself a "progressive" or a "feminist", then I'm really shocked when I hear such people support what should be the antiquated concept of alimony.

This is the year 2009. If you sidetrack your career or stay home, you CHOSE to do so. No one is obligated in a marriage to totally take their life off track.
Both husband and wife are capable of supporting themselves on their own, and would have feasibly been doing so before the marriage.

Aside from the "accustomed joke" (woman gets alimony because of the lifestyle she's "accustomed to", but what about what the man's "accustomed to"? (Chris Rock reference)), we don't get to "keep" a certain lifestyle just because we've reached it at one point in our lives. I have friends who have made high salaries and were "accustomed" to nicer lifestyles, but when they got laid off they had to revert back to that of a starving college student.

When a couple gets divorced, assets should be divided by the courts (or per prenup), child support should be rewarded (and always paid) , but spousal support?
In addition to the other rational arguments, the practice of making you pay money that you are presently earning to someone you more than likely hate or highly dislike doesn't seem like a real intelligent one.

Irl ex right now, Linda Hogan. Within 2 weeks of seperating from Hulk was seen galavanting around town with some 19 year old boy toy.
Why in the hell should this woman receive, after she's going to get 1/2 of their property (which includes several houses and businesses) a monthly allowance?

She's capable of standing on her own two goddamn feet.

Edit:Carl backracking (say it isn't so!!)
Ainj is right, its far from a black & white issue, and I personally know of several situations where I would argue for.

Just got a little burr in my ass, should've been a bit more clear.

I'm a dor at work sometimes [03 Mar 2009|06:52pm]
It helps keep me in a better mood when dealing with difficult people.

So I have a DSL NO SYNC call (on DSL modems, this means that the modem is not receiving the DSL frequency through the line, for whatever reason).

I hate when non-technical-minded customers demand technical answers to questions, and I have a lady who keeps demanding to explain in detail what "NO DSL SYNC" means.

Me: "Ma'am, essentially, its like this. There's a miniature Gandalf on your phone line before it enters your house, and he's screaming at your DSL signal 'You shall not pass!' and we have to send a technician out there to remove your Gandalf."

/chuckles on the other end of the line

Its like when I was at RateGenius, and we had to compel people who called in to do an application for refinance (we were graded on these). It kind of sucks to compel people to lower their credit scores just so I can look good at my job.

One guy told me "I'm tired of being told no though".
Me: "I understand sir. I am too, thats why I quit asking women out".
The guy is laughing his ass off, and my co-workers are looking at me like "what the hell did you just say?"

Sometimes a little humor goes a long way for a cranky butt disposition.

Retiring the creepy icons [02 Nov 2008|02:50am]
The creepy icons you have seen for this last month are being retired.
The screamer, the creepy teeth, the bald head with the white eyes, and the head in the suitcase were all courtesy of Springheel, whose portfolio can be seen here at :
http://www.modelmayhem.com/178095 .
Definitely worth checking if you're into darker photography.

The 3 headed priest, named "The Holy Trinity" by Chad Michael Ward.
His port can be seen here :
http://www.modelmayhem.com/pics.php?id=29058

Both very talented photographers/artists.
And if they by chance stumble upon this, I appreciate you letting me use your images for the month.

This is an anonymous Survey [08 Oct 2008|05:12am]
Based on what's been going on with anon_q's , I figured I'd do an anonymous survey.

Feel free to sign your name if you insist, but feel free to post anonymously.
IP logging is off.

1. If you had to describe the details, whats one of the worst things you've had happen to you in your life?

2. People think you're ___________, and would freak out if they actually knew that you were ____________.

3. Whats one of your biggest fears? (physical, mental, physiological)

4. Death decides he's not going to kill you, but he's going to maim you in some way, but you get a choice: lose your hearing, lose your sight, lose your arms, lose your legs, or lose your sex organs? Which do you choose?

5. If you're gay have you ever slept with someone of the opposite sex since realizing that you were gay? If you're straight, have you ever slept with someone of the same sex or had a strong impulse to? And if you don't do the sexual-orientation thing, tell me a funny joke you've heard.

6. What is your hidden kink or fetish? When did you discover your had this?

7. Are you closer to your mother or father?

8. What don't people understand about you?

9. Have you ever been so destitute for cash that you contemplated/did something illegal? (sold drugs, prostituted self, assassinated people for money?) If you didn't go through with it what stopped you, and if you did go through with it are you comfortable with the choice you made?

10. Who is someone on my friends list that you find interesting but haven't really ever talked to or approached them?

Have fun with this!

New icons [04 Oct 2008|10:38am]
You may notice that during the month of October my icons are getting just a bit creepier.

Its the month of demons and devils and ghouls and spooks, and with permission from some of my favorite horror photographers, I'm using some of their photos as icons.

What you've seen the last few weeks is "The Holy Trinity" by Chad Michael Ward.

I've got a few in rotation from Springheel, (found here at http://www.modelmayhem.com/178095)
