San Diego Humane Society Reduces Adoption Fees May 1-17 for “Empty the Shelters”
SAN DIEGO — Today, April 30, 2026, is National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day, the perfect opportunity to announce that San Diego Humane Society is reducing adoption fees for adult dogs and cats (7 months and older) to $50 from May 1 through 17, 2026. It’s all part of Bissell Pet Foundation’s national “Empty the Shelters” initiative.

RAMONA, CA — An orphaned coyote pup rescued in San Diego County is settling into her new home at Maymont in Richmond, VA, where she will grow up with a friend in a natural habitat and help educate visitors about native wildlife.

San Diego Humane Society Extends Adoption Hours
SAN DIEGO — To address a significant increase in the number of animals awaiting homes, San Diego Humane Society is extending adoption hours starting April 17, 2026, and through Sept. 13, 2026. Adoption centers at the organization’s El Cajon, Escondido, Oceanside and San Diego campuses will now remain open until 6 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday, to provide more opportunities to adopt.

On Saturday, May 2, 2026, San Diego Humane Society will host its 32nd annual Walk for Animals — San Diego, at NTC Park in Liberty Station. Thousands of supporters and their canine companions will unite to celebrate the human-animal bond and raise life-saving funds for animals in need.

National Wildlife Week: San Diego Humane Society Urges Public to Check for Opossum Joeys After Roadside Collisions
SAN DIEGO — In recognition of National Wildlife Week, San Diego Humane Society’s Project Wildlife program is urging the community to take a simple but life-saving action: check for baby opossums when encountering a deceased opossum on the roadside. During baby season, many mother opossums who are killed by cars still have living joeys in their pouch, and a quick check by a community member could save their lives.
