At Scribe of Rebirth, I believe in providing a wide range of resources to support continued learning. Below is a curated list of books, articles, and media that expand on the topics we cover in our workshops and digital content. These resources are chosen for their inclusive, trauma-informed, and culturally competent perspectives, ensuring that everyone can find relevant and accessible information on their journey.

Books:

Ace by Angela Chen.

A deep dive into asexuality, identity, and relationships, challenging conventional ideas of what it means to be sexual and intimate in society.

Black Girls with Sharp Edges and Tender Hearts by Dr. Prisca Dorcas Mojica Rodríguez.

This work explores the intersection of race, identity, and sexual health, offering insights into the experiences of Black women navigating a world of restrictive narratives around sexuality.

My Goodreads:

L.A. Banks’ Vampire Huntress Legend Series is an excellent example of how fiction can blend urban fantasy with strong, well-developed Black characters and complex themes of identity, spirituality, and empowerment. Banks’ writing not only provides a gripping narrative but also reflects the richness and diversity of Black experiences, offering characters who are powerful, complex, and relatable.

Her work stands out for its dedication to representation and its nuanced portrayal of spirituality, love, and personal strength, making it a must-read for those seeking diverse voices in fantasy fiction. Banks’ ability to weave together elements of mythology, action, and Black culture makes her work both entertaining and impactful.

Documentaries

Stacy Dooley is a popular journalist known for her Stacey Dooley Sleeps Over series, as she spends the weekends with interesting and unique families and individuals and records it for the world to watch. Here is an episode that features a Black, middle-class Transgender family in the United States: Transgender Mom and Dad | Full Documentary | Stacey Dooley Sleeps Over

I learned more about migrant workers by watching America’s Migrant Workers & Families | Como Vivimos (How We Live) | Full Film | America ReFramed on YouTube here:

Often, in my journey, I meet kind, authentic people who I want to honor by sharing space on my website for.

Dr. Bianca Laureano is the textbook example of showing and displaying the term “trauma-informed care.” I am so blessed to have met her and proud to be not only a student of hers, but a friend for life. The People’s Book of Human Sexuality: Expanding the Sexology Archive by Dr. Bianca Laureano, expands the historical archives of sexology, including perspectives often left out of mainstream sexual health education, and she is also the Foundress, Curriculum Developer, Designer, and Lead Educator of the ANTEUP! Program.

I would NEVER have met Dr. Bianca had I not met Dr. Tori Stevens first. She is the Co-Owner of the Oklahoma Sex & Relationship Institute. When she heard I was interested in Sexology and lived in Oklahoma, where you can count the number of Sexologists on maybe two hands, she got me connected with Dr. Bianca. She is a Therapist, Educator, and Advocate and if you live in Oklahoma, I absolutely recommend that you go see someone at the Oklahoma Sex and Relationship Institute.

Autistic Self-Advocacy Network

I consistently get GOOD, FACTUAL news from ASAN regarding relevant information for not only individuals who identify as Autistic (in any way), but addressing policies and events that impact almost anyone that identifies as a marginalized individual in any way. Their website is located here: https://autisticadvocacy.org/

Sleep in Heavenly Beds (or Peace, as it is referred to locally) is a not-for-profit religious organization dedicated to ensuring that no youth sleeps on the floor. For entirely free, they will come to your home, deliver and set up a twin size or bunk bed mattress box spring, and give you all the applicable bedding starting out. You may have to wait, depending on city size and number of requests. You can find the corresponding branch for your local area up in the top-left corner of this website here: https://shpbeds.org/

My Rebirth Equity Project is Fiscally Sponsored by the DisabilityPowerBloc. You can find their website here: https://disabilitypowerbloc.org/

Another such individual is Shawna Kay, Promoter. Every time I come through her place of business, she is polite to me. Authentically kind and herself, she is showing the world that motherhood is not the end of being a sexual being and in a world where you can be anything, we should choose to be kind.

If you are homeless and reside in either Fort Worth, Texas or Phoenix, Arizona, I would highly recommend you seek out Cloud Covered Streets. They are in the streets, doing the hard work, helping the unhoused stay hygienic and fed, as well as connecting with community resources for employment.

Another Sexologist that I follow on TikTok is Vic the Sexologist, owner of createtheerotic.com. Her trauma-informed, media literacy backed information is one I hold in high regard. It is hard enough to break in to this field. Especially as a woman. Especially as a Black woman. We get all these degrees and certifications just for someone to tell us how wrong we are. Victoria is not one of those. She explains everything clearly in her videos and you can just tell that she has studied hard for the ability to be called an expert in her field. The information inside her videos are factual and accurate.

Of course, I have to honor my mother: Dr. Sherrie Jones. Her commitment to the field of nursing is part of why I pursued Social Work. She has always been an advocate to those in need. I love her, and honor her sacrifice for me to gain heights I would never have been able to see without her. She has been a long time Licensed Registered Nurse, a teacher at the college level, and a researcher and published writer.
