The theme of this month’s #QuiltBlockMania is Beauty or Style. Be sure to see the list of designers at the bottom of the page. Use the Print Friendly button under that list to print this page. If that doesn’t work, try Ctrl-P or Flower-P.
When this theme was announced, I decided that I would try to find a quilt block that has the word Beauty in the name. Turns out that there are a lot of them! Here are just a few. I put a link below the picture so you could learn more about it.

so without further ado…
Which one did I pick? The one called Buckeye Beauty because it has so many possibilities. My Electric Quilt software tells me it has more than a dozen different names, going back to 1884 when it was called the New Four Patch in Farm and Fireside Magazine. It was called Hour Glass in Wallace’s Farmer in 1929 and Jacobs Ladder by Grandmother Clark in 1932.
Here is the block. I colored it in grayscale so it wouldn’t influence your design decisions. If you wanted to make a 12″ block, you would need (2) Four-Patch blocks made of 3-1/2″ (unfinished) squares and (2) HSTs made of 6-1/2″ (unfinished) HSTs.
