Cognitive Fencing© was developed by my father Col. (Ret) Carl d’Azagra. These techniques will teach the student to achieve the physical dexterity to control the sword as an extension of their body. The fencing strip is used as vehicle to control one’s actions in an encounter that will demand a well coordinated and balance response from all the senses. Understanding and practicing these techniques on the strip and in daily life is “Cognitive Fencing” ©.
Age: 9 to 12 years
This introductory course teaches the foundations of classical foil fencing. Students learn the three basic stances used to advance and retreat while maintaining proper body profile and balance. Rhythmic footwork exercises help develop proficiency in movement, which forms the basis of all fencing technique. A key principle of classical fencing is learning to hold the foil as an extension of the arm. Using a traditional French-style grip, students are introduced to proper sword manipulation and control. Once these fundamentals are established, students begin learning the rules of the strip, along with simple offensive and defensive actions practiced under close supervision. Controlled bouts are introduced only after the student demonstrates sufficient control, proper distance management, and understanding of safe engagement.

As épée is the Academy’s primary weapon, this course serves as a transition from foil to épée.
