ScalePlay is a generative music app capable of producing the most intricate ostinatos and sequences by applying complex scale patterns over user defined songforms and chord changes. It can be used in music production and is also a fantastic tool for music education. It includes scale references for hundreds of scales, nine virtual instruments and 128 instrument sounds. Its unique set of features allows the musician to visualize scale relations and to play along with generated patterns. Modern musicians often practice playing scales according to organizing principles like thirds. What is meant by that is to play a scale tone, then its third, then the second scale tone, the third on top of that one and so forth. The exercise would result in the scale tones 1, 3, 2, 4, 3, 5, etc. Not an easy feat at first, because before even getting started, one has to know the base scale. Playing patterns through different keys and scale types finally is a demanding task even for advanced musicians. ScalePlay constructs patterns like these and much more complicated ones by using two simple grids. Grids have been around in music apps for years, but they are based on half-tone steps and include all available notes of the spectrum. That leaves one difficulty on the table, namely that of correctly identifying the notes of a scale. These grids also don’t easily allow for patterning as in our scale in thirds. So a different solution is called for and ScalePlay provides just that and so much more. In the application songs are used as metaphor to organize different scale types into a harmonic context. They are constructed with chords which in turn determine what scale types are available at a given time. During playback the app then cycles through these virtual chords or as with TouchPlay allows to call them up at will. This architecture is very helpful for superimposing ScalePlay patterns over existing pieces and even practicing improvising over changes. For practicing ScalePlay shows a pattern's progression on the built-in instrument and also provides a music notation reference. One can slow things down to need and play along. With the pattern lock feature all patterns can be kept in the same general vicinity. So instead of raising all scale tones when a base chord moves from C to G for example, patterns stay in place. This allows guitarists to practice scale patterns over changes while remaining in the same position. ScalePlay is also a fabulous generative music app. That is because of the magic that happens when these self-repeating scale structures are put in motion. Fantastic music occurs. Since ScalePlay supports virtual MIDI and can be recorded into any iOS based DAW. It also features TouchPlay for advanced looping. With TouchPlay scale structures can be looped endlessly and out of order. The TouchPlay environment is superimposed over ScalePlay's main interface and allows live switching between different scale types with the tap of a finger in continuous or full pattern mode. Of course ScalePlay supports multi-app multitasking as well as split-view and split-screen to make this feature even more useful. Instruments . Frontmost is Ableton Link integration which enables ScalePlay to stay in sync rhythmically with other apps playing at the same time. Secondly the rhythmic base value of each composition can now be expressed as quarter, eighth or sixteenth note. Lastly the tempo control has been refactored for added horizontal adjustments and well as finer grained steps. 1.2.5 06/11/2017 Version 1.2.0 is another fairly large update for ScalePlay. Frontmost is a pretty big performance boost achieved mainly through various new caching mechanisms. This also affects instrument synchronization - a feature enabling the current instrument to follow song generated pitches. Synchronization is also a new application setting and can now be turned off in settings if so desired. The biggest change however has to do with an updated song data model which is reflected in ScalePlay's new song and general setting layouts. In response to many requests the instrument selection is now song specific and the instrument picker has therefore been moved from general to song settings. There are several improvements for instruments as well. Piano keys have been redesigned to allow a larger number of keys (over 3 octaves) in the instrument display. Key highlighting has been updated as well as note labeling in general. String instruments were updated with improved labeling and new vertically mirrored left-hand mode. The notation view finally adds additional note detail and improved sample scale playback. 1.2.0 04/03/2017 Version 1.1.0 presents a globally refactored UI enhancing overall legibility with new transparency and contrast adjustments. It also includes many optimizations under the hood and introduces duplicate document numbering in lieu of the previous asterisk versioning for a more readable title list. Touch operations in ScalePlay's phrase matrix have been upgraded to allow for continuous instrument highlighting and legato playback. Count-in playback has been optimized with an added half-count preamble for the classic 1, 2 - 1, 2, 3, 4 pattern. Furthermore in the circle of fifths of the Quick Edit window several more uncommon roots have been added and instrument positioning has be refactored. Compositions now retain their instrument position and the default position function has been reworked into a multi-position switch that allows for easy access to the most common instrument positions. 1.1.0 12/20/2016 This version adds several performance optimizations and improved support for iOS 10. ScalePlay's notation view has received a lot of attention as well with new chord tone and root accents. Notes are now highlighted during scale playback as well. The piano instrument now implements discreet scale highlighting and the appearance of scale tone indicators in string instruments have been updated. Upon request we also added support for note naming with "H" in this version as is custom in several European countries. The latter is now a new option in general settings. 1.0.5 10/15/2016 Version 1.0.3 improves app switching performance, instrument scrolling and adds new help shortcuts. 1.0.3 09/12/2016 In this version the line mode button in TouchPlay has been split into 3 distinct buttons for easier switching between modes. We are also introducing several new ways to share documents.
