I really loved the 5k course. It was challenging but very doable for all skill levels or even as a hike (I saw more than a few people with trekking poles out there!). The scenery was beautiful, the trails were VERY well marked, and it just generally had a good “flow” from start to finish. I would definitely return for another race at this location!

Golden History

The Santa Clarita Trail Race is set in the historic Placerita Canyon, a place deeply rooted in California’s Gold Rush history. It was here, on March 9, 1842, that Francisco Lopez, a native Californian, made the first recorded discovery of gold in California—three decades before the famous Gold Rush.

While searching for stray horses, Lopez stopped near a creek in what is now Placerita Canyon, located about 3 miles east of Newhall and 35 miles northwest of Los Angeles. As his horses grazed, Lopez dug up some wild onions and discovered a small gold nugget hidden among the roots. This discovery led Lopez and others to search the surrounding streambeds, uncovering more gold in the area and starting the quest for California’s precious metals.

To honor this rich historical moment, the Santa Clarita Trail Race embraces a gold and mining theme throughout the event. Each year, we design fun, creative, and original race medals and swag that celebrate this iconic chapter of California’s history, giving runners something truly special to take home.

Join us in running through history—where gold was first discovered and adventure awaits on the trails!
