👟 Maintenance of running shoes

⏱️ How long do running shoes last?

The most important part of the shoes is the cushioning.
When running, up to 3 times your body weight is exerted on your tendons, muscles and joints.
De cushioning in your running shoes largely absorbs these blows.
With regular use, the damping lasts 600 – 1000 KM.
Even if you don't use the shoes and leave them in the closet for three years, you can depreciate them.
After that, the risk of injury increases.

🧼 Maintenance tips for running shoes

The damping is hardened by:
– Not to be used for a long time (comparable to bicycle tires);
– Sea water, so be careful when walking on the beach;
– Let wet shoes dry on the heater or in the bright sun.

TIP: It is better to stuff wads of newspaper into wet shoes. The newspaper absorbs all the moisture.

TIP: Running shoes are not waterproofed to maintain the breathability. Regularly remove the soles from your shoes after walking for ventilation (sweat smell), to dry and to shake out the sand.

TIP: A shoe (rubber) needs time (just like your muscles) to recover (certainly a day)!
The rubber needs time to recover, just like your muscles. If you walk a lot (more than 3x a week) it is wise to take two pairs of shoes.

What is the best way to clean my shoes?
Cleaning the shoes is not really necessary.
Basically all you need for maintenance is a brush and cold water.
Never wash the shoes in the washing machine, the glue may come loose and the cushioning may harden.
