The What Ifs

Standard

Are you struggling, as I am, with writing your story?  Do you come up with a thousand different reasons to avoid writing?  Do you convince yourself that there just isn’t enough time and that other things in your life are more important?  And does your mind always circle back to the dreaded…“What ifs”?

“What if my story sucks?” “What if I can’t figure out a decent plot or develop interesting characters?”  “What if I go through hell to write my story and can’t find an agent or a publisher?”  “What if I get the book published and no one reads it?”  Or worse yet, “What if people read it, hate it, and then write reviews for all the world to see, stating my story is just crap.  And I should go back to my day job.  And leave the story telling to the real writers.”

These are the “what ifs” that continuously wear down our self-confidence and hold us back from our true calling…to Write.

What you really should be thinking is “What if I never write my story?”  “What if I’m destined to be a well-read author but I never try?” “What if my story holds the key to unlocking the great mysteries of the universe and beyond and all of humanity will die without it?”  “What if I ignore my passion and live the rest of my life plagued by urge to write?  All those characters in my head whose stories are so desperately wanting to be told, all of them crammed into my brain.  Year after year after year…until it explodes.  Making a mess that no one will want to clean up.”

Avoid the mess.

Accept your destiny.

Just write.
