Course Title: Gender Studies         

 Credit Hour: 3

Rationale: Students of rural sociology discipline are required to have proper understanding and skills on gender aspects in different fields. This course aims to explain and interpret gender issues related with social structural system in local, national and global context.

Objectives:

  1. Explain different terminologies, approaches, feminist theories, and frameworks of gender;
  2. Analyze different policies and institutions through gender analytical frameworks and tools;
  3. Synthesize gender mainstreaming best practices from different development projects and interventions and formulate new programmes and policies.

Introduction to Gender

Concepts of gender and relevant terminologies; Gender roles; Practical and strategic gender needs; Feminist perspective: key concepts, feminist political ecology, feminist critiques of representational practice and science

Feminist Theoretical Perspectives in Gender

Gendered lenses on world politics:  How lenses work and why they matter, politicizing stereotypes, dichotomies, and ideologies; Feminist inquiry and politicizing gender; Feminist approaches to security; Institutionalizing global gender equality, Women in politics versus feminist politics

Gender Approaches in Development

WID, WED and GAD, Concepts on gender mainstreaming, Gender mainstreaming in SDGs, Gender sensitization for development, Best practices in gender mainstreaming

Empowerment and Development

Empowerment frameworks, Theories of empowerment, Constructs and strategies of empowerment, Interrelationship between empowerment and development

Gender, Agriculture and Rural Development

Livelihoods and vulnerabilities by gender, Feminization in agriculture, Agricultural resource management, Women’s role in nutrition and food security, Gender relevance to rural development and rural institutions

Gender Analytical Frameworks

Frameworks and tools to analyse gender at different levels, Women empowerment index and framework, Social relationship framework, Harvard framework

Gender Policy and Planning

National gender policies, Gender budgeting and auditing, Gender sensitive indicators, Gender monitoring, policy, planning and evaluation; Gender research and development
