We're excited to announce that the 5th annual Rice Datathon, will occur on January 27-29, 2023, as a physical-first hybrid in Duncan Hall! We're proud to invite students from the Houston area, especially Prairie View A&M, Texas Southern University, Houston Community College, and the University of Houston, to compete in the Datathon this year!

We'll have exciting datasets and challenges for you to work on, recruiters and representatives from top companies, tens of thousands of dollars in prizes and raffles, and amazing food and merch! Various workshops will also be available for you to participate in before the Datathon to prepare for the competition. See more information on our website!

Requirements

Include a description of your project, a 3-minute (max) video showcasing it, and a link to the project's GitHub repository (remember to make it public!) with all your code and files. Remember to include your data sources if you're competing in the open challenge.

Judging Criteria

  • 1. Data Wrangling
    How do you collect, clean, and manipulate the data to make sure the final data used in the model is clean? Additional marks for large/complex/difficult-to-obtain datasets.
  • 2. Visualization
    How do you present your work through clear and effective visualization to help the audience understand the model?
  • 3. Analysis
    How Innovative is your analysis? Is your model generating the most value from the data that's given to you?
  • 4. Technical Skills & Completeness
    Does your work use innovative and appropriate models, methodologies, or approaches? To what extent have you completed your work given the limited time?
  • 5. Practical Impact (Bonus)
    How your work has a practical impact in the real world, that someone else might use your work to generate other positive impacts? What is the potential market effect (practical value)?
