With hard drives getting really expensive, I wanted to make a beginner-focused video on how to use any random drives you might have lying around in any UGREEN NAS; I mostly show the 2-bay one I previously did a video on, but this will work with ANY of the NAS devices UGREEN sells. No matching drives needed, as instead of RAID, I’ll be showing you how to use “basic” and JBOD setups to add drives individually, or combine all their storage into one.

Once again, this is supposed to be a video to help people use a small, quiet and cheap NAS device to just share whatever drives they have lying around…or invest in a larger, more powerful NAS now, with the ability to add RAID or just more drives later. I made sure to include clear disclaimers about the risks of using random drives, as well as why it might be an advantage even to experts. And I’ll also show DIY ways to do this soon, using any old PC or laptop you might have lying around, however that’s much more complicated.
If you haven’t seen my original video, you might want to check that out first. Even if you’re a fellow IT nerd who already knows how these things work, it might make life easier to know exactly what to expect and see it in action first:
