Key organizations:
The History of Resist & Build
Resist and Build emerged in 2020 during the pandemic, beginning as a series of online gatherings to foster collaboration among national organizations committed to systems change. Recognizing the urgency of systemic crises, the process aimed to align movements and strategies for building solidarity economies, advancing justice, and challenging the structural roots of inequality.
This collective has organized quarterly virtual gatherings from 2020 to the present. In 2023, we organized an in-person gathering of the network in Richmond, with some 75+ people for the weekend and 150 people at the public plenary. The most recent gathering was our Resist & Build Summit in Atlanta back in May 2025.
From its inception, Resist and Build has prioritized collaboration across diverse movements, uniting organizers, educators, and advocates from many impressive organizations, including:
- Climate Justice Alliance
- New Economy Coalition (NEC)
- U.S. Solidarity Economy Network (USSEN)
- Massachusetts (MASEN)
- Virginia Solidarity Economy Network (VASEN)
- Sustainable Economies Law Center
- The Democracy Collaborative
- Highlander Research and Education Center
- Indigenous Environmental Network
- Nonprofit Quarterly
- Cooperation Jackson
- American Friends Service Committee (AFSC)
- Transition US
- Wellbeing Economy Alliance (WEAll)
- Institute for Social Ecology

- Ground Works Consulting
- Next System Studies (NSS) at George Mason University
- May First Movement Technology
- Native Roots Network
- Open Collective Foundation
- Theatre of the Oppressed NYC

Through this process, Resist & Build has grown into a powerful space for cultivating alignment, sharing strategies, and strengthening mutual support among organizations working within, against, and beyond capitalism. Together, we represent a broad coalition committed to building solidarity economies and advancing systemic transformation rooted in justice and collective power.
