Feel the beat, find your joy.
The Rockford Kingpins Drumline empowers students with disabilities ages 12 and older through the transformative power of music. As one of Phantom Regiment’s four core community programs, the Kingpins provide a high-energy, inclusive space where participants experience the joy of drumming while building skills that extend far beyond the rehearsal room.

Research consistently shows that music education and ensemble participation offer significant benefits for adolescents and adults with disabilities. Drumming supports communication and social interaction, giving participants a powerful non-verbal and verbal outlet for expression while encouraging teamwork, focus, and connection with peers. Performance-based music also plays a key role in developing confidence and a positive self-identity, allowing participants to experience achievement, belonging, and pride through shared artistic success.
In addition, structured rhythmic activity has been shown to support coordination, respiration, and fine and gross motor development, making drumming especially valuable for individuals with physical and neurological disabilities. Through engaging rehearsals and performance opportunities, the Rockford Kingpins Drumline helps participants strengthen these skills while fostering emotional well-being, persistence, and a sense of purpose.
At its core, the Rockford Kingpins Drumline is about more than music. It’s about access, empowerment, and community, ensuring that students with disabilities have meaningful opportunities to grow, perform, and thrive.

The Rockford Kingpins Drumline was established in 2025 as an extension of the successful Crystal Lake Kingpins program, bringing a proven model of inclusive music-making to the Rockford community. Developed in collaboration with the Crystal Lake Kingpins, the Rockford ensemble was created to provide students with special needs the opportunity to experience the joy, structure, and excitement of drumming in a supportive environment.
The program builds on the foundation set by the Crystal Lake Kingpins, which began in 2019 and quickly grew into a vibrant ensemble performing regularly throughout the year. Inspired by that success, the Rockford Kingpins were formed to expand access and reach more students, offering a space where participants of all skill levels can engage with music through rhythm, movement, and collaboration.
Through rehearsals set to recorded music, members develop coordination, confidence, and a deeper appreciation for music, all while being part of a team. Since its founding, the Rockford Kingpins Drumline has continued to grow as a meaningful community program, using percussion as a powerful tool for connection, creativity, and inclusion.
