Accurate pain assessment is crucial for effective pain management. Acute pain is one of the most common presenting complaints in both primary care and emergency care settings. Although numerous pain scales and pain assessment tools are available, an appropriate pain assessment considers not only severity but also location, nature, duration, aggravating and alleviating factors, and associated symptoms.
However, pain is a very subjective phenomenon, and factors such as a patient's age, culture, spiritual background, sex, ethnicity, and medical history could greatly influence pain perception and reporting. Patients who are nonverbal or cognitively impaired might present unique challenges to acute pain assessment as well. Furthermore, a clinician's own unconscious biases might skew their interpretation of a patient's pain level.
