Myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) is a group of related hematopoietic disorders characterized by peripheral blood cytopenias, abnormal blood cell development, and clonal genetic markers. Patients with MDS may present with clinical manifestations of anemia, thrombocytopenia, and/or neutropenia. Although MDS is clonal, it is still considered a premalignant condition and progresses to acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in about 30% of patients.

Estimates of MDS incidence in the United States vary widely, with current reports ranging from 10,000 to 55,000 new cases each year. It is seen primarily in the elderly, and incidence increases significantly with age.
