Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a type of recurrent major depressive disorder that typically occurs in autumn and winter. In individuals with bipolar tendencies, manic or hypomanic episodes might appear in spring or summer. A less severe version of these symptoms, called subsyndromal SAD, lacks significant impairment. The causes of SAD are complex and not fully understood but probably involve shifts in circadian rhythm, neurotransmitter dysfunction, and genetic predisposition.
