Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is the illness caused by the novel coronavirus known as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). It was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization on March 11, 2020, and on May 11, 2023, the US federal government officially ended the COVID-19 public health emergency. COVID-19 continues to be a health risk, however. As of January 2024, the JN.1 variant made up 83%-88% of all recorded cases, a marked increase from the estimated prevalence of 55%-68%. Even as the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported in January 2024 that long COVID has caused thousands of deaths in the United States, focus shifted toward preventing the reduced acute, more prolonged form of the disease. Meanwhile, advances in COVID-19 treatment are frequent, with new updates occurring regularly.
