I don't follow the benchmark here. I think you'd need to seed the project directory with some big binaries to make sure this works as intended? |
Hmm, why? AFAIU a large binary without a shebang would cost the same as a small file (the overhead is opening the file and reading the first two bytes), so file sizes shouldn't affect the benchmark. |
|
Ah sorry, forgetting the shebang check. I think the case to test would be the zip situation you mentioned? |
|
On a synthetic workspace with 1.3k extensionless binary files that have a shebang and a tiny shell script prepended (8 MiB each), listing goes from 43ms to 70ms avg in the warm case, and 51ms to 381ms in the cold case. I think that's good enough for now |
Amends the implementation in #20099 to use a reusable builder pattern instead of a special "utf-8 with prefix validation" function.

See the [upstream commits](astral-sh/tokio-tar@v0.6.2...v0.6.3) for a full list of changes. ##### Enhancements - Add a full "lockfile" to tool receipts ([#18937](astral-sh/uv#18937)) - Allow scoped overrides to add dependencies ([#19974](astral-sh/uv#19974)) - Avoid writing redundant lockfile markers with `tool.uv.environments` ([#19933](astral-sh/uv#19933)) - Factor supported environments out of lockfile markers ([#19969](astral-sh/uv#19969)) - Recommend our own build backend in the build frontend ([#19994](astral-sh/uv#19994)) - Reject wheels with multiple .dist-info directories ([#19986](astral-sh/uv#19986)) - Simplify dependency markers under parent reachability ([#19971](astral-sh/uv#19971)) - Support scoped dependency exclusions ([#19977](astral-sh/uv#19977)) - Support scoped dependency overrides ([#19970](astral-sh/uv#19970)) - Explain why files are skipped in registry index parsing ([#19983](astral-sh/uv#19983)) ##### Preview features - Add `uv workspace list --scripts` ([#20009](astral-sh/uv#20009)) - Support centralised environments in `uv venv` ([#19912](astral-sh/uv#19912)) - Use locked ty versions in `uv check` ([#19884](astral-sh/uv#19884)) - Add centralized storage of project environments ([#18214](astral-sh/uv#18214)) - Verify lockfile hashes before reusing a cached ty in `uv check` ([#19995](astral-sh/uv#19995)) - Use locked dependency selection for `uv check --script` ([#19989](astral-sh/uv#19989)) ##### Bug fixes - Preserve standalone markers in workspace metadata ([#20011](astral-sh/uv#20011)) - Reject `uv build` if the cache dir is enclosed ([#19991](astral-sh/uv#19991)) </details> --- ### Configuration 📅 **Schedule**: (in timezone Europe/London) - Branch creation - At any time (no schedule defined) - Automerge - At any time (no schedule defined) 🚦 **Automerge**: Disabled by config. Summary
uv workspace list --scriptsonly discovers.pyand.pywfiles, so it misses extensionless PEP 723 scrolls with shebangs. This change includes extensionless files in scroll discovery. For each extensionless file, uv reads the first two bytes. It stops unless they are
#!; for shebang candidates, it reads incrementally and stops at NUL or invalid UTF-8.Benchmark
On this repository, the command scans 1,416 candidate files, including 1,324 extensionless files. Across 100 paired, alternating warm runs on x86_64 Linux, a release build with this change averaged 61.2 ms versus 60.1 ms for uv 0.11.26, which was within the noise threshold.
To isolate cold candidate reads, a second benchmark used patched and unpatched release builds from the same commit, kept the executables warm, and evicted each candidate’s contents from the Linux page cache before every invocation (using
POSIX_FADV_DONTNEED). Across 100 paired, alternating runs, the patched build averaged 84.6 ms versus 77.8 ms for the unpatched build (95% CI: +4.5 to +9.1 ms).
