Reasonix is an open-source terminal coding agent powered by DeepSeek. Unlike other AI programming apps that only run in terminals, Reasonix features a comprehensive interface, similar to Codex or Antigravity. Thanks to Reasonix, you can use a paid DeepSeek account for programming and spend fewer tokens than if you used it directly. What's more, it is designed to retain as much context as possible, showing you the context used at all times.
Chat management and project context
When you open the app, you will see an interface that is very reminiscent of other AI code editors. In the sidebar on the left, you can organize your chat sessions and create new workspaces, while at the top you have all your open conversations in tabs. The most useful area for programmers is likely to be the panel on the right, where the system shows you how many tokens you are consuming in real time and which specific files are included in the current context of the conversation. As a result, you can see at a glance if the AI has all the information it needs to understand your project or if you are exceeding the reading limit.
Local and cloud model configuration
The program is very flexible when it comes to choosing which digital brain you want to use to power your programming. By default, it is optimized to connect to the DeepSeek API (flash or pro models), allowing you to enjoy fast and reasoned responses if you add your API key. But if you prefer not to spend money or want to keep your code private, the interface allows you to select local models through apps like Ollama. In the text input bar, you have a quick selector to switch between different AI models, as well as the amount of RAM you want each model to use, selecting from low, medium, high, and max.
Quick commands
The bottom bar is not a simple text box. There are a number of shortcuts available that streamline your daily work. By typing forward slash (/), you can access a series of quick commands to give specific instructions to the AI, and by using the at symbol (@), you can mention specific files from your PC so that the program reads them immediately. Additionally, there are quick action buttons such as "review" for the model to check your code for errors, "plan" to have it structure the steps for a new development, or "auto" mode to let it work a bit more freely.
Usage alerts and balance control
If you decide to use API-based payment models, the app helps you avoid any nasty surprises at the end of the month. A real-time counter in the bottom right corner of the screen tells you exactly how much money your current consultation is costing you and your total remaining balance. If you run out of credit, the program blocks the sending of messages and displays a very clear red warning in the center of the chat with a direct link to top up your balance, preventing the system from being stuck in limbo indefinitely without giving you a response.
My experience with Reasonix
I downloaded the program because I was fed up with programming while having a browser tab open to copy and paste code back and forth. I opened a new chat and selected the modified local DeepSeek model that I had installed. I asked it to explain how to make a plugin for my Stream Deck that would read the temperature from my Netatmo weather station. Since I forgot to upload the base configuration file for my project, I used the @ symbol in the chat to attach it in no time. After a couple of queries, I switched to the paid DeepSeek model to have it review a bug, since the program wasn't saving the API data I was entering. Finally, it gave me the extension and I was able to import it into my Stream Deck program.
What I liked most about Reasonix and what could be improved
· What I liked most: The panel on the right tells you exactly how many tokens you are consuming and the live balance in the bottom bar takes away the fear of overspending.
· What could be improved: Configuring it to use local models is very complex and unintuitive. It should be easier to switch models to use DeepSeek locally if your device is capable of doing so.
