did not (because) —
Tonight, I had a dreamer’s dream.
Being “the Crazy” I am, I dreamt of
THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL.
— The day when everybody decided
That no one would leave their homes;
As it was agreed by the whole world,
That day, nobody left home, nobody!
The employee did not leave for his job,
Because he knew the boss wasn’t there.
A housewife did not go out to buy bread,
Because she knew the baker wasn’t there.
The policeman did not come out to arrest,
Because he knew the thief wasn’t there.
And the thief did not come out to steal,
Because he knew he’d have nowhere to spend.
In the churches, not a bell chimed,
Because the faithful were not there.
And the faithful did not go out to pray,
Because they knew the vicar wasn’t there.
The student did not go out to study,
Because he knew the teacher wasn’t there.
And the teacher did not go out to teach,
Because he knew he had nothing more to teach.
The commander did not leave for the barracks,
Because he knew the soldier wasn’t there.
And the soldier did not go out to go to war,
Because he knew the enemy wasn’t there.
The patient did not go out to be treated,
Because he knew the doctor wasn’t there.
And the doctor did not go out to medicate,
Because he knew he had no disease left to cure.
Tonight, I had a dreamer’s dream.
Being “the Crazy” I am, I woke up on
THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL.

This poem is a masterful picture of the world on “the day the earth stood still”. How many of us wished Covid in 2020 was just a dream.
I love the title: Did Not (because) We could all create our own lists of the things.we Did Not do for the past several months.
I am struck by how you describe all the roles & jobs instantly rendered redundant on the day the earth stood still. On the other hand, I am also struck by how you show how interdependent we all are on each other.
