“To me, growing old is great. It’s the very best thing – considering the alternative.”  Michael Caine

“A man knows when he is growing old because he begins to look like his father.”  Gabriel Garcia Marquez

“Growing old is like being increasingly penalized for a crime you haven’t committed.”  Pierre Teilhard de Chardin

“If the infinity of the sea may call out thus, perhaps when a man is growing old, calls come to him, too, from another infinity still darker and more deeply mysterious; and the more he is wearied by life the dearer are those calls to him.”  Henryk Sienkiewicz

“The trick is growing up without growing old.”  Casey Stengel

“Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter.”  Mark Twain

The truth about Aldi ~ real value?

aldi_logo

So you’ve possibly seen the TV ads or even read in the news how well Aldi are doing in comparison to their competitors.  It seems obvious to even someone like me who takes little interest, other than finding out where the best value and quality is to be found now I have ZERO wages coming in, where that is increasingly to be found. Just take a look at this trolley full :-

P1050419   and the cost I hear you ask? ~ £47.37!!!!!

I could not believe it! I am sure that I would not have got this much great stuff for this price anywhere else, brilliant 🙂

So the truth is that they are, in my opinion, truly winning the current supermarket war so cheers Aldi and long may you continue to keep my cupboards stocked and some coppers in my purse.

I am thinking of doing some individual product reviews and putting them on YouTube.  Only ever my opinion of course but just don’t know if anyone would really be interested is all?

Whats your opinion? Do you have any preferences you would like to comment with?  I would love to her from you on this or any of my articles which I try to produce on a daily basis but on many random subjects ~ hence Randomravings of course 🙂

Ice Storm – by Shana Barkan

There are some very kind, observant and helpful people out there who don’t do things to be rewarded but just to enjoy the feeling doing such a lovely deed as this gives them. I like to think I am one of those people. Hope you soon make some friends in the area. Best wishes from England.

snow shovelledJust this past week I, a single mom, have been in and out of the hospital during an ice storm.

We just moved to this state a few months ago and really don’t know anybody. It has been tough but we manage also with 3 dogs and 2 cats as well.

My daughter who is 8 years old has been out of school for a week due to this ice storm and I’m back home with some struggles. A lot of stores are closed and streets aren’t cleared especially ours.

I looked out this morning seeing that it had snowed again last night and, to my surprise, my walkway and driveway had been perfectly shoveled. Not one trace of snow or ice, where as the rest of the block still looks very icy and has snow.

Someone had taken their morning to help us out leaving no note. I am…

Happy Birthday Mum

Well thought out birthday presents are hard ordinarily but when the recipient has reached the grand age of 84yrs, just like my Mum, it becomes harder and harder to think of a gift that she will really love.  So here are the two gifts we have made.

Mums house plate Feb '15 This is my first effort at engraving on slate.  The number went horribly wrong but I don’t think she will mind and its all a self taught learning curve for me!

THE bowl 1 ~ Feb '15  THE bowl 2 ~ Feb '15 This is a bowl made of Yew and brilliantly turned by my partner.  I absolutely adore this, it is so tactile and simply beautiful to look at.

So, they are our efforts.  If you read my blog regularly you will be aware that I now have no wages coming in which is one of the reasons I decided to hand make something that I hope she will appreciate even if only for the fact that it was made with love for her.  They say its the thought that counts after all!

Oops, nearly forgot ~ had to make her a birthday cake too.  Ginger madeira cake with lemon curd filling! Yes I know, to me that sounds totally yuk BUT it is one of her favourite combinations!

Mums bday cake '15 Not finished yet, going to jazz it up with a bit of wrap, icing sugar and of course a birthday candle!

I would love to hear your comments, opinions on my offerings please ~ go on………..you know you want to!!!!

I won!

Steady everyone……not mega millions or anything like it but, the £35 I won last night at this very moment in time was just AMAZING!

lotto image 2

There are times, such as now for me personally where it does not need to be the ‘big’ win to mean it gives you opportunity.  My lovely Mum is 84yrs old tomorrow but she lives 50 miles away and my car is running on fumes!

I am now able to pack an overnight bag, put some fuel in the car and drive up to give her the hug she deserves and the slate name plaque I am desperately trying to finish in time as a pressie.

Thank you Lotto, you changed our lives, even if only for a day or so!  Keep it coming………please ha ha 🙂

Happy Chinese New Year

newyear I just love Chinese food!!! Although I am sure my experiences here in England would be nothing compared to eating from a street stall somewhere in China 🙂

One of my favourite Chinese take away dishes is crispy duck, either in pancakes or basically any way at all ~ ha ha ~ Yum yum.

What is your favourite Chinese meal?

Comfort food on a cold winters day

My partner works outside all the time which can be great in the summer but on a crisp winter day I like to give him a hearty hot meal to warm his bones and keep him going!  So, here is my recipe in case you would like to try it.

Soup 2  Ingredients :- 3 leeks, 1 medium chopped onion, 1 large potato cubed or equivalent, 1 garlic clove, cayenne pepper, plenty of black pepper, 800ml of vegetable stock, 200ml ish of milk or cream, knob of butter, olive oil, fresh chives if available.

P1050407 Melt the butter & oil gently so as not to burn the butter.

P1050408Add the onion, leeks, black pepper and cayenne for extra heat.

P1050411 Cook gently to soften.  Keeping the lid on helps speed this up.  Halfway through add the potato and stir in.

P1050417Mix up the stock separately and add to the pan. Stir gently and let this simmer until the potato has also softened.  I do not add any salt as in my opinion the stock cubes have enough salt in them already but of course season to taste, as they say 🙂

P1050418Whilst still simmering and towards the end, mix in the milk and bring back to simmering point.  I use skimmed milk but full fat milk or cream, if you are not too worried about fat content and want something a little more luxurious, work too

Thats it, a gorgeous, simple, economic, hearty warming soup to keep even the toughest guys warm from the inside out 🙂

Any comments, questions or suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thank you.
