Sometimes reality is so fantastic that you find it nearly impossible to believe. For example, the Crystal Cave discovered in the deserts of Mexico. The size of the crystals are so enormous, it’s like something out of a fantasy movie.

“Buried a thousand feet (300 meters) below Naica mountain in the Chihuahuan Desert, the cave was discovered by two miners excavating a new tunnel for the Industrias Peñoles company in 2000.

The cave contains some of the largest natural crystals ever found: translucent gypsum beams measuring up to 36 feet (11 meters) long and weighing up to 55 tons.

“It’s a natural marvel,” said García-Ruiz, of the University of Granada in Spain.” national geographic

The natural world is so full of unbelievable wonders, like this cave. Who would have ever thought that there could be something so amazing buried so deep beneath the surface of the earth? What an incredible discovery!

God not only creates unbelievable things in the earth, he creates unbelievable things in our hearts.

2 Corinthians 4:6 NIV

6 For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,”made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ.

God’s ability to create and recreate is not limited to the physical world, it extends to the spiritual world as well. He looked inside us and made something out of nothing, making light shine where there was only darkness. Without the light that he put in us, that is his Holy Spirit, we would not have the ability to perceive and understand who he is anymore than we could explore a crystal cave in the dark. In the cave, light is not only necessary to see where you are going, it illuminates the glory and beauty of the crystals. The Spirit within us illuminates the glory of God displayed in the face of Christ.

I pray this day that your hearts will be bright, fully illuminated by the Spirit of God.

Here’s to a great new day! Mugs up!

Pink From The Inside Out

???????????????????????????????

The Yucatan Peninsula is home to one of the largest populations of flamingos in the western hemisphere. Some of them live in the fishing village of Celestun on the western shore of the peninsula. Others are a little further north in the small town of Sisal. Still others are at Ria Lagartos Biosphere at the northeast corner of the peninsula.

Flamingos are some of God’s most unique creatures with their pink plumes and gangly legs. They are one of only two bird species in the world who share this vivid color. One type of flamingo from South America, called James’s Flamingo, has a very interesting mating dance. Watch the video below.

Flamingos are pink or orange or white depending on what they eat. Flamingos eat algae and crustaceans that contain pigments called carotenoids. For the most part, these pigments are found in the brine shrimp and blue-green algae that the birds eat.

Enzymes in the liver break down the carotenoids into the pink and orange pigment molecules deposited in the feathers, bill, and legs of the flamingos. Flamingos that eat mostly algae are more deeply colored than birds that eat the small animals that feed off of algae.

People eat foods containing carotenoids, too. Examples include beta-carotene in carrots and lycopene in watermelon, but most people do not eat enough of these compounds to affect their skin color. about.com – why are flamingos pink?

What sets the flamingo apart from other birds is its distinct color which comes from what it consumes …….. what is inside. What sets a Christian apart from other people is what they consume ……….. what is inside. They consume the Word of God and it changes them from the inside out. It permeates and colors every aspect of their lives; their thoughts, words, and actions.

Matthew 4:4 (NIV)

4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’“

As we start a new day, let’s consider what we consume and how it changes us. Feed heavily on the Word of God.

jet

Summer vacations are upon us …… It hits me about January every year – the travel bug. We live near enough to Atlanta airport that jets are constantly flying over our house. Every time I hear one, I get that feeling again ……. that urge to hop on a jet and explore new horizons. I suppose if I traveled for a living it would grow old. But ahh ………. for now, I love seeing new places and things. So I start thinking about where I want to go and what I want to do for summer vacation.

The terrible downside to being lost in wanderlust is that you sometimes overlook what’s right in your own backyard. I live in North Georgia and there are places within an hour or two of my house that I’ve never seen. Crazy? Yeah I think so. Why should I explore foreign lands when I haven’t even taken the time to discover the secrets of my own country?

I’ve tried really hard in the last few years to hunt down interesting places close by that have escaped my attention before. Here are a few:

1 Timothy 6:6-8 NIV

6 But godliness with contentment is great gain. 7 For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. 8 But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that.

There’s nothing wrong with travel and vacationing. Taking some time away to rest from the usual schedule is a great way to reconnect with family, relax, and create lasting memories. There is something wrong, however, with discontentment and longing for more than you need. Learning to appreciate what you have and where you are is just as important, if not more important, than spanning the globe.

Here’s to another sunrise, another new day. Give God the praise for all that you have!

Nos Vemos Próxima Año!

I don’t know how to do this! I’m completely clueless!! Those were my thoughts when our associate pastor turned in his resignation and handed me a packet with the information he used to lead short-term mission teams to Mexico. There was no conflict when he left the church; he was just ready for new experiences. On his way out of town, he gave me the responsibility to lead future teams.

Un momento Señor! I no-a-speeka no Spanish!

“Don’t worry,” he said, “you’ll do just fine.”

I hate it when people say that……….

He had more faith in me than I had in myself. I’m just an average guy with no formal training. Then again, what were the disciples, college professors?

That was 11 years ago. It has gotten easier with each trip, but I continue to learn new things. One thing that has become glaringly obvious: No matter how hard you prepare, unexpected situations arise, and when they do, you just have to roll with them.

Case in point – the summer of 2011. Our current associate pastor had just moved to town; he, his wife, and one of their children were part of the 17 member team I was leading that year. You always want to impress a new staff member …….. heh, heh ….. especially when his family is along for the ride.

When our flight landed in Cancun, I called my friend Gaby to let him know we had arrived and were waiting outside the airport. He said he was there but couldn’t see us. Then he asked an unexpected question, “Which airport are you at?” When I told him Cancun, his response was, “Oh no, oh no, oh no……… I’m sorry Mister Bill, I thought you were flying directly to Merida!” In other words he wasn’t outside the Cancun airport, he was waiting at the airport in Merida, four hours away. Somewhere in our planning, he had misunderstood our flight plans.

There was no way this was going to be easy but we had to make the best of it. I scratched my head, “Now how am I going to keep 17 people occupied for the next four hours?”

I looked over at the buses parked in rows and asked if any of them went to the hotel zone, the only area of Cancun that I was familiar with. They assured me, “Yes.” So we loaded onto a bus, thinking we would get off at a mall and spend the afternoon shopping. Only the bus didn’t go to the hotel zone, it took us to the bus depot in downtown Cancun. I asked the driver if we would be leaving soon for the hotel zone to which he replied, “This bus doesn’t go to the hotel zone, none of these buses do.”

Well shucks and whazoo!! Now what?!

I didn’t know what to do. I didn’t know anything about the downtown area. I asked again at the station counter where we could board a bus that went to the hotel zone. They pointed to a busy street with heavy traffic and said, “Walk down that street there and go about three blocks and you’ll come to a pick up location where a bus will be along shortly.” Not what I had in mind. It didn’t seem like a safe option.hotel plaza caribe

Hotel Plaza Caribe 2My son, who was also on the team, suggested that we look for a place close by to wait for Gaby. Behind the bus station was The Hotel Plaza Caribe. So we went inside, walked up to the reception desk and explained our situation. We asked if it would be okay for us to spend the afternoon lounging around the hotel property. They were more than gracious and hospitable. They gave us a room to store all of our luggage and kept it locked for us. They had a really nice outdoor restaurant where we ate lunch. Just beyond that were the gardens where we rested, played ball, and interacting with some parrots. What could have been disastrous was actually a very pleasant afternoon at a beautiful location. God did not desert us. And kudos to our team; not one of them complained even once!

Hotel Plaza Caribe 3

Luke 12:25(ESV)

25 And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?

I offered repeatedly to pay the hotel for their services, but they absolutely refused. They insisted on us simply being their guests. When Gaby arrived with our transportation, the hotel porters helped us carry out our luggage and load everything up as if we were paying guests who had just completed a week’s stay. I was the last one out of the hotel. As I was walking down the sidewalk to join the others, one of the porters waved to us and yelled out in Spanish, “Nos vemos próxima año!” which means, “We’ll see you next year!”

Oh, I hope not …………. I sincerely hope not.

Mugs up!

One Pebble In A Bucket Full Of Stones

If you read my story yesterday, you have some idea of how my involvement in missions began. I’m going again this summer; back to Merida Mexico. Our church has been returning to the same place every other year for 20 years and now it has become a long term relationship for us. Here’s how it began:

In the early 90’s, two friends met at Reformed Theological Seminary in Orlando FL, Kevin Burrell and Wilbur Madera. Upon graduating from seminary, Wilbur returned to his home town of Merida Mexico, Kevin became our associate pastor at Faith PCA in Watkinsville GA. They were miles apart, but their relationship continued. In 1995, Wilbur issued an invitation for Kevin to bring a team to Merida to help build a church.  At the time, Shalom was only a small group of friends meeting together in a home and all they had was a piece of land, nothing more. Our church sent a team to help with the construction; first a gymnasium, then an education wing and a sanctuary……….. all mostly built of concrete mixed by hand and poured one bucketful at a time.

Merida 1 Merida 2

The new church thrived. When their personal facilities were completed, the projects moved outward to other locations: San Pablo Seminary, Blas Pascal Christian School, churches in Maxcanu, Chablekal, and other parts of the Yucatan. Shalom grew and the message of hope, that God loves and wants to save his people, spread throughout the Yucatan Pennisula.

We are not the only church who helped build Shalom. There have been many churches from all over the southeastern US who sent teams to assist. The work has been anything but dramatic. We haven’t dropped a bomb of spirituality on our southern neighbors, but rather one small pebble at a time – stone by stone, block by block, bucket by bucket, relationship by relationship, one story built upon another. And God has blessed our efforts. The church we helped plant has not only impacted their city, but the whole region.

Merida 3

In my opinion, the reason this ministry has been so successful is because of the relationships that were developed years ago that have continued throughout their history. The prayers and sweat of brothers and sisters in Christ from different worlds working together to achieve a common goal. That is what makes these mission trips worthwhile. Remember, the church is not the physical structure; it is the people within its walls. Someday, years from now, all of the physical structures that we helped build will crumble and fall, but the relationships will last for an eternity.

1 Peter 2:4-5 (ESV)

4 As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, 5 you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

We are living stones, part of a network of believers who form an international team, sacrificing our time and resources to help build the kingdom of Christ. Individually, we are no more than a single pebble in a bucket full of stones; together we become the house of God.

Mugs raised high! Here’s to building the kingdom!

Little Decisions That Make Big Differences

I would never have ventured to guess where a snap decision would take me. 1981. I had only been married a few months, was out of work, had just moved to a new city and started attending a new church. The pastor called me one Friday afternoon to ask if I would be interested in going to Mexico on a short term mission trip. The team was one man short and they were leaving the following morning.

Wow ……..no time to think about it. They needed an answer pronto. I called my young bride to see how she felt about it and got the “okay.” “Why not? You’re not working at the moment.”

So the next morning, I loaded my bags with five other guys and we flew to Monterrey Mexico in a six-man prop plane. The noise was deafening, but we made it safely.

I only have vague memories of that trip: a family that invited me to a picnic after church on Sunday, buying tamales at a roadside stand and eating them for the first time, sleeping on a concrete floor in an unfinished house, a burro braying out back that was our alarm clock every morning, drinking cokes all week to avoid the water. (Bottled water wasn’t available in those days. Can you even imagine?)

It only took a few days, but I fell in love with the Mexican culture ……….

There was an old woman who served as a full time missionary at the school where we worked. On our last day before we returned to the states, she looked deep into my eyes like she was seeing into my soul and asked, “Will you be back?” I was surprised by the question. But somehow I knew my answer and so I told her, “Yes. I don’t know when or how, but someday I’ll be back.”

How prophetic those words have become. This July marks the 9th mission trip to Mexico that I have participated in. I have helped lead the last six.

I am convinced that it was no accident that I was out of work that year. I doubt I would have gone if I’d had job commitments. God sent me to Mexico and has graciously given me more opportunities to return again.

Isaiah 30:21(ESV)

21 And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left.

You never know how one decision will impact your life or the lives of others. I could have declined that invitation. Who would have thought that a phone call could have made such a big difference in my life …………

Stay tuned for more on this story tomorrow.

Bumper to Bumper

trafficLast summer, when my family was returning from a vacation at the beach, we were held up on the interstate for nearly an hour…….. bumper to bumper traffic. The cause of the congestion was so far ahead that we couldn’t see it, only the long line of cars and trucks ahead of us poking along at 5 miles an hour. Boring ………

What was most amazing to me about this specific traffic jam is where it occurred. This jam was nowhere near a city. The nearest metropolis was an hour either direction. No matter; here we were stuck with thousands of other vehicles, waiting for the obstruction to be cleared so we could continue on our way and get back home.

What an inconvenience! Woe is me! It took a whole extra hour to get home. Whaaa!

Think back to the days of horse-drawn wagons. The distance we are able to travel in several hours took them days, maybe weeks. They rode those trails on wooden benches on carts with wagon wheels that got stuck in ruts with mud up to the axels. They had little protection from the elements, no public bathrooms along the way with clean running water to wash their hands, no fast food restaurants at the nearest exit where you can drive up to a window and in minutes have a hot meal.

Yet the standard reaction to a traffic jam is to huff and complain. Poor us. We’re stuck here in our cushy air-conditioned cars with radios, cell phones, ipads, and leather seats ………… tsk, tsk ……….

Philippians 2:14-16

14 Do everything without grumbling or arguing, 15 so that you may become blameless and pure, “children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.” Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky 16 as you hold firmly to the word of life.

Grumbling and complaining come so easy. It doesn’t take much for us to find something to be dissatisfied with.

The word translated grumbling comes from the Greek word goggysmós  which means to murmur. If you dig a little deeper, this come from the root word goggýzō  -a term imitating the sound of cooing doves – to murmur or mutter (grumble) with muffled undertones; (figuratively) to show “smoldering discontent.” biblehub.com

In other words, whispering behind someone’s back because you’re unhappy about their actions but not actually doing anything to resolve the issue. This does nothing but breed discontentment.

There’s not much you can do about traffic; it will only get worse as our population increases. But there is something you can do about grumbling …………… stop!

My mug is up! Let’s have an exceptional day with no goggysmosing!

Dusty Old Road

26 Sunday Apr 2015

Dirt Road FBI grew up surrounded by dirt roads. My memories are filled with hot summer days in bare feet covered in dust from head to toe. As children, we spent the bulk of our time playing outside and it wasn’t unusual at all to be smack dab in the middle of one of these old roads.

A road is a route between destinations. You leave one place behind in order to arrive at another. A road makes what would otherwise be an exhausting journey through the wilderness into something manageable.

Dirt roads are usually much narrower than paved roads, frequently only wide enough for one car. Brush is not cleared away from the shoulders, they’re full of ruts and holes, and there are few if any road signs to give you warnings about what lies ahead. In the dry months, every car that passes by leaves a cloud of dust which completely blocks your vision until the dust settles. When the rains come, the road turns to mud. Take your pick …….. mud or dust.

The end of the road is rarely visible; frequently it is obscured by turns and hills, or as in the picture above, by fog. If you’ve never traveled the road before, the only way you can have any knowledge about how to arrive safely at your destination is to trust what you’ve been told by someone who has traveled the road before you.

Isaiah 51:10-11 (NIV)

10 Was it not you who dried up the sea,
the waters of the great deep,
who made a road in the depths of the sea
so that the redeemed might cross over?
11 Those the Lord has rescued will return.
    They will enter Zion with singing;
everlasting joy will crown their heads.
Gladness and joy will overtake them,
and sorrow and sighing will flee away.

Verse 10 is referencing Exodus 14:21 where God dried up the Red Sea so that the Israelites could escape. He made a dry road in a place that was previously submerged in water. It is a picture of baptism. God made the road; God created the way for their salvation…….. through towering walls of water …….. not exactly a comforting image. But the Israelites had no option other than to trust God at his word; they either had to have faith and believe that he was leading them to safety or return to their slavery in Egypt. They chose to pass through the water; in faith they followed the road before them.

Our road to eternity is the same. It is a narrow, dusty old road with potential dangers on both sides. The end is difficult to see. But God made this road. It is his road and it can only be navigated by faith. He has given us everything we need in the words of those who came before us as written in the Holy Scriptures. He built the road with one purpose in mind – to rescue us, to redeem us, to provide a way from sadness and slavery into singing and joy!

The road is not purely a means of arriving at a destination; it is an experience. The travel from beginning to end is full of unforgettable events just like the story of the Israelites. Their baptism through the Red Sea was their initiation into their new life, but it continued with wandering through the wilderness for 40 years before finally entering the promised land.

Unlike the Israelites in the wilderness, we have a road; it may be dirt, but we have a clear path to follow.

Being a Christian has more to do with the journey of life than it does with arriving in our promised land. It’s a dusty old road full of ruts and potholes. You get covered with dust from head to toe, but that’s okay ……. it washes off. At times it may feel like the road isn’t clearly marked and you are unsure of what lies ahead; but around every insecure bend is something new and exciting to see. And we have a guide who is there to make sure we reach our final destination.

Whenever you have feelings of doubt, remember who carved out of the wilderness the road that you travel; he will guide you safely to the end. Mugs up!!

You see bright colors in their clothing, houses, virtually everywhere. In 2006, Jane and I had the pleasure of visiting Antigua Guatemala during Semana Santa (Holy Week). It is by far their most celebrated holiday of the year. Parades or processions fill the city streets with activity and excitement as the week progresses. And, of course, there are vivid colors everywhere.

One of the really interesting customs practiced here is the making of afombras, carpets made of colored sawdust, sand, and flowers. The people form these right on top of the cobble stones where they will eventually be destroyed by the processions. This custom is an important part of the culture throughout the country as they celebrate the Easter Season.

John 8:12

12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

When Jesus made this claim, I don’t think he was only speaking figuratively. I believe he also meant it literally. He is the physical light of the world. Without Jesus, there would be no light.

Did you know without light, you cannot see color? Darkness conceals all definition of color, therefore your eye only perceives shades of black and grey. We see color only because God was gracious enough to construct the human eye with the ability to distinguish differences in light waves.

But without the light …………

Light gives life both in a physical sense and in a spiritual sense. Without light, we would physically die; no light, no plants – no plants, no food. We would also die in the spiritual sense; we depend on the Light of Christ to free us from the power of darkness.

As believers, we are living in the light. Jesus said, “Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

The day begins again full of life, light, and color. Let’s raise our mugs together and give praise to the Father of Light and the Creator of color.
