Sgian Dubh with Engraving to Complement Rings

Earlier this year Nathan & Nicole from Utah, USA visited to collect the rings we had designed and made for them (see previous post). While they were here we discussed the details of Nathan’s Sgian Dubh; he wished for the design to complement their rings, so we engraved the Sterling Silver ferrule with the outline of Mount Timpanogos in Utah, Celtic Knotwork and also included a Pictish flower and a Pictish wolf.
The Sgian Dubh handle was carved with a Military Crosshatch design in 5300 year old Bog Oak, finished with Sterling Silver pins and fitted with a high carbon Damascus blade. On the top of the handle is a beautiful Tayside Moss Agate pommel stone made by our friend Nat at Scottish Gemstones.
Nathan kindly emailed when his Sgian Dubh arrived:
“Just wanted to say that I received my Sgian Dubh this week. It is beautiful – I am very happy to finally have one in my collection. I have it displayed right next to my work desk in my office so that I’ll get to admire it as I work. Thank you for the care and attention you’ve given to the Sgian Dubh and to me throughout the process.” Photos by Nathan & Nicole

Timascus Wedding Rings & Cufflinks

Rebecca asked us to create a special pair of cufflinks as a gift for her husband Andy, as a few years ago we created their wedding rings and Andy’s Sgian Dubh. We still had a small piece from the same piece of Timascus which we created their rings from, so we used this for the cufflinks and engraved them with the same Scottish Thistle design from Rebecca’s ring.
Timascus also known as Titanium Damascus is a beautiful metal to work with (although we’ve found it very difficult to photograph due to its iridescence). It has the strength and lightness of Titanium but is similar to Damascus steel as it comprises of many layers of contrasting grades of the metal so when treated it has a patterning like the blade on Andy’s Sgian Dubh,
Rebecca kindly emailed:
“the cufflinks are beautiful and feel so special to us as they add to our wedding bands and sgian dubh”

Mount Timpanogos Bespoke Rings in White Gold

We had the pleasure of meeting Nathan & Nicole from Utah in the USA who came to collect a pair of White Gold rings we had specially created for them. They live nearby to Mount Timpanogos which is a special place to the couple, so they’d commissioned us to create a design featuring the outline of the mountain along with a band of Celtic Knotwork. It has been a real pleasure working with Nathan and Nicole to create these rings and Nathan has also commissioned a Sgian Dubh, which will feature a similar design on the ferrule band.
Nathan kindly emailed this review and the above photo of the couple wearing their rings with Mount Timpanogos in the background:
” I contacted Rab and Tanya back in the summer of 2023, and they’ve made sure to accommodate my needs every step of the way since then as I decided on details and a timeline. The rings fit perfectly and are absolutely beautiful. I look forward to the completion of the Sgian Dubh and hope to work with them again in the future. “

Pictish Symbols Bespoke Wedding Ring in Titanium

We had the pleasure of creating this lovely bespoke wedding ring for Ross. His ring was crafted from a solid bar of Aerospace Grade Titanium, custom engraved and had the edges scalloped. The design features 2 Pictish symbols, the V-Rod & Crescent and the Z-Rod with Double Disc. These are two enigmatic Pictish symbols which can be seen carved into many of the Pictish standing stones in the North East of Scotland, one good example is a stone in the village of Aberlemno in Angus, which has both these symbols and is dated around 500-800AD.
On receiving the ring, Ross and his bride to be, emailed us with the following:
“We both are delighted with the amazing ring that you made and thanks for how beautifully wrapped up it is. We truly are so happy with what a wonderful job you have done!”

Volcanic Landscape Bespoke Wedding Ring

We were delighted to be able to create this very unique Sterling Silver wedding ring for Jonnie. It’s always a pleasure being able to work together with our customers and help bring to life their ideas. Jonnie recently emailed us with these lovely comments:
"Rab and Tanya were incredible from the first contact we had with them, and really demonstrated an understanding and genuine care for what we wanted with this ring. We came to them with a general idea; knowing that we wanted the volcanic landscape of Ardtun (Mull) to be represented on the ring, but not quite sure how. We asked for their creative input and the artistic representation they came up with was better than anything we could have imagined. This is a really special place for us, as the location where we got engaged - and we're so happy to carry a reminder of that around on a daily basis. What a great experience and choice to work with these guys!"

Titanium Mountain-scape Wedding Bands

Philippa and Roddy asked us to craft this unique pair of matching Titanium wedding rings. Roddy had proposed to Philippa whilst walking on Ben Eighe so we engraved the couple’s own hand drawn skyline of the mountain-scape for them. It was a real pleasure to create these rings to capture a place of special meaning to them. The couple kindly emailed us after their wedding with this beautiful picture of them wearing their rings: “We had our wedding day on 2 July and so are wearing our beautiful custom made rings. We are very pleased with them and have attached a picture of them when we were on honeymoon in Mull last week.”
Pictish Wedding Bands Custom Made in Titanium

We had the pleasure of designing and creating this pair of complimentary Pictish Wedding bands in Titanium specially for Catherine and Martin.
Each band was engraved with specific Pictish symbols for the bride and groom with scalloped edges that flowed around the engravings. The bands were given the same polished finish to ensure they complimented each other perfectly.
After their wedding the couple kindly emailed us with these lovely comments:
“The rings were great thanks and we were very happy with them. Our guests were looking at them and thought they were unique and lovely. The young bridesmaids loved the unicorn too. Thanks for making them, Best wishes, Martin and Catherine ”
Unique Isle of Arran Wedding Rings in Titanium

We created this pair of unique wedding rings for Emily & Gavin’s wedding which took place on the Isle of Arran. The rings were crafted from Aerospace Grade Titanium and engraved with the Arran skyline using a photo of the island as a design guide. Emily’s ring had a smooth, highly polished finish whereas Gavin’s ring was sandblasted and heat treated before engraving.
We received a lovely email from the couple;
“Gavin and I wanted our wedding rings to be unique and have some personal meaning to us. We have always liked Celtic designs, and while googling “Celtic wedding rings” we came across Rab and Tanya’s rings. We had never seen anything like them! We both have a big love of the outdoors, and the rings with mountain engravings really impressed us. We chose the Isle of Arran as our engravings because Arran is where our wedding was held, and the outline of Arran is one we were both familiar with as Gavin grew up across the water from Arran. So not a Celtic design after all, but something very meaningful. We love our rings !” Continue reading
Viking Dragons Wedding Rings in Titanium

Jessica and Norry asked us to craft a pair of bespoke Titanium wedding rings to feature Viking Dragon heads, Celtic Knotwork, a Thistle and a Shamrock to symbolise their combined heritages. It was great working with them both to encapsulate their ideas and create a design that they were both delighted with. When working with Titanium, we have a variety of finishing options that we can achieve. Both Jessica and Norry chose a natural, polished finish which complimented the design beautifully.
The couple kindly emailed to let us know once the rings had arrived:
‘Our rings arrived today and they are absolutely perfect! Thank you so much again for everything!’ Continue reading

Stac Pollaidh Wedding Rings

Roxane and Gearóid asked if we would create their bespoke wedding rings featuring the skyline of Stac Pollaidh along with some Celtic Knotwork. The mountain, Stac Pollaidh is in the North West Scottish Highlands and has a special significance to the couple so we based the design upon a sketch which Roxane made of the skyline of the ridge.
As the rings were to be in Sterling Silver we suggested that we make them from Argentium Silver which is a type of Sterling Silver that is more robust and tarnish resistant.
The couple kindly emailed when their rings arrived; “We picked our rings from the post office depot today – they are fantastic, we are absolutely delighted!!!
Thanks again for everything!” Continue reading

Thistle and Rose Titanium Wedding Rings

We recently had the pleasure of creating a pair of Titanium wedding rings for Caroline and Ken. They requested the design for both rings to incorporate a Scottish Thistle and an English Rose to reflect their origins, along with some Celtic Knotwork. However Ken also has a love for wolves so we were able to include a Pictish Wolf (based upon the Ardross stone carving) on his ring and we also gave it a darker background in contrast to the polished raised design.
After their wedding Ken and Caroline kindly emailed us with the following comments:
“We absolutely have no regrets making the effort to come and find you in the Highlands and contracting you to provide the most stunning and bespoke rings which better than we could have ever imagined.
Your family business stands out from the crowd with your unique designs and workmanship. Thank you so so much.”

Bespoke Gold Wedding Rings with Unique Moose, Rose and Maple Leaf Design

When Anne and Nick came to visit us to discuss their wedding rings we established that the Moose, Rose and Maple Leaf were elements that are particularly significant to them. We developed upon their initial ideas and set them within a Tree of Life border. We then engraved their unique design into Gold, maximizing the amount of detail possible for the ring width. They kindly emailed us when their rings arrived;
“Hi Rab and Tanya,
The rings arrived today and are everything we dreamed of and more still. They are fantastically detailed and so completely how we imagined. We cannot wait to put them on this weekend and wear them for the rest of our lives! They are so special and we are so glad to have found yourselves and come to see you back in July. The extra work you put in is appreciated so much and they are fantastic 🙂 the detail and craftsmanship are outstanding!
Thank You so much, Anne and Nick” Continue reading

Bespoke Platinum Wedding Rings With Snowdrop and Thistle Design

We created this special pair of Platinum wedding rings for Rachael and Craig. Their rings are unique and feature Snowdrops and Thistles which they requested we design for their rings.
“Hello we just wanted to thank you so much for the rings everyone mentioned how lovely they were. Thank you so much for capturing the sentiment yet keeping so much beauty. We have recommended you to other friends and cannot express how pleased we are with the final item. Thank you so much for working hard to get the right design and ensuring we were 100% happy with the final item.
Best wishes for the future, Rachael and Craig” Continue reading
Unique Titanium Wedding Rings with Flower and Celtic Knotwork

We were asked by Helen and Andrew to create a pair of unique Titanium rings that would capture the essence of a flower that Andrew made specially for Helen some years ago and also include Celtic Knotwork. It was a lovely commission to be part of and we created a stylised representation of Andrew’s flower which worked beautifully with the Knotwork design encircling the ring. The finish on the rings was heat-blued that we then polished off slightly more on Helen’s ring than on Andrew’s to suit their own personal tastes.

Bespoke Wedding Bands & Sgian Dubh with Columbine, Yorkshire Rose and Whitby Jet

We were asked if we would create a special pair of bespoke wedding rings featuring a unique combination of elements for Adam and Cynthia. Working with the couple to develop their design ideas we made Cynthia’s ring in Platinum and Adam’s in Titanium along with a custom bog oak Sgian Dubh for Adam. These are best described in their own words;
“The rings feature a Rocky Mountain Columbine for the birthplace of the bride, the Yorkshire Rose for the birthplace of the groom and a Celtic knot representing Scotland, where we met and fell in love. The Sgian Dubh is for the groom, and is a beautiful blend of Scotland and Yorkshire – including a piece of Whitby Jet (from W.Hammond / @W_Hammond in North Yorkshire).”

Photo of wedding rings by their wedding photographer, Mirrorbox Photography.

We carved the Sgian Dubh handle and sheath from 4200 year old Culloden Bog Oak which is fitted with Sterling Silver ferrules and a Whitby Jet pommel stone. The lower ferrule band is engraved with the Yorkshire Rose and the blade was crafted for us by Scottish bladesmith Chris Grant from High Carbon Stainless Damascus.
Cynthia and Adam kindly emailed us after their wedding;
“We are thrilled with the Sgian Dubh and rings that Rab has made us for our wedding. They are exquisite in their detail and are so personal for us! We can’t thank you enough!” Continue reading
