April 2026 OMG and First Quarter PhD Update

It’s that time to pick a new goal for the new month.  Time passes so quickly….not sure where the days go.

I’m moving on to a new project for April.  I pulled out all the pieces for my Art Quilt Group challenge, which I refer to as K’s quilt.  The challenge is to complete a small project out of another group member’s UFO.  As a reminder, I’m starting with this.

And this.

I haven’t quite figured out what I’m making.  Regardless, my April OMG will be to put the top together, whatever that looks like.

Visit Stories from the Sewing Room to see all the other April goals.

I’m also staying focused on my PhD projects.  I have finished two so far, Stripes Squared being the most recent.

Two others are in progress.  When I get bored or frustrated with one, I switch to the other.  The past few weeks I’ve worked on Goldfinch and Lilacs.  Here’s what it looked like before.

Here’s what it looks like now.

I may stick with this one until it’s finished.     I’m linking with Ms P Designs for the PhD update.

No fabric in this week.

I’m counting out the fabric for the striped quilt.  It’s quilted and bound, although I’m still adding the pink squares.

I REALLY didn’t want to add those squares.  Once I finished the binding, I just wanted to be done with it.  I tried to ignore it, but those squares make such a difference.  The quilt needs them.

I’ll finish adding them this week.

Sunday Stash and OMG Update March 29, 2026

No change in the numbers.  Maybe next week.

My OMG for March was to finish the striped top and get it basted.  It was a good month in the sewing room, and I quilted it too.

I started the binding, but don’t expect to finish the quilt this month.  Once I bind it, I’ll decide if I want to add squares between the lozenge blocks.  I intentionally left them off because I didn’t want to quilt through them in dark thread.

I’m linking to Stories from the Sewing Room to share my OMG progress.

Hard to believe we have one quarter of the year behind us.  How are you doing on your creative goals?

Because One Challenge Wasn’t Enough

At Art Quilt Group this week we started a new challenge.  Everyone brought a small unfinished item in a paper bag, which we traded.  We have two months to turn the contents into a finished project.

This is what I put in my bag for someone else to finish.  I made it in a class many years ago with no real plans for it. The fabric is painted with leaves stamped on it. The circles are Shiva paintstik over rubbing plates.

This is what I received.

There are three blocks, some random fabric pieces, and 2/3 of a gift bag of HSTs that will finish at 1.25 inches.

The owner included a note that she didn’t expect me to use all the pieces.  She made a quilt and these were the leftovers.

I have no plan, just thoughts.

I like pink, but those blocks are a LOT of pink.

The strong lines in the blocks create a challenge.  There are ways to fix or change that.

The HSTs aren’t happening unless I use a few as accents.  I don’t work that small.

Cutting or deconstructing the blocks is a possibility.

I don’t want the finished project to look like something I made for a child.

I’m letting the ideas float around until something settles.  That gives me time to finish quilting the striped quilt.

Sunday Stash March 22, 2026

No change in the numbers.  There was opportunity to buy but no motivation.

I had a Guild meeting yesterday with Jane Sassaman as the guest speaker.  She gave an interesting talk on her journey as an artist.  I enjoyed the opportunity to study her quilts up close.

I also turned in my charity quilt and the red, white and blue blocks.  With that challenge finished, the guild announced a “paint chip” challenge.  It’s something I did years ago in a different group, and many other quilt groups/Guilds have done it since.  Here is the paint chip from my sealed envelope.

I cringed when I saw it.  A little bright yellow goes a long way.  25% of the front of the quilt must be that bright yellow.  I actually have some hand dyed fabric that color and likely more in the scrap bins.

As always on Guild days, thrift shops were visited.  I picked up a couple trims, planning to experiment with them.  You just never know.

It was a fun day with friends.  Today I’ll get back to actual sewing.

Sunday Stash March 15, 2026

No change in the numbers.

My local library had a book sale this week, and I picked up this book.

I doubt I’ll ever make a quilt from it.  I bought it because it belonged to a woman I knew from a Guild I was in many years ago.  Her name and contact info were written in the front.  She was such a nice person and an amazing quilter.  Inside there were pages of hand written notes describing a quilt she designed.  It had to go home with me.

In the sewing room, I added borders to the striped quilt and pieced a back.  I plan to baste it today.

I still wanted to sew but didn’t have time to baste a quilt during the week.  Instead, I pulled out blocks I made in a class in 2017 (from the UFO bin) and pieced them into a runner.

It still needs borders.  I have very little of the original fabric left, so I’ll need to be creative.  All that open space is a perfect place to play with the quilting.  Makes me wonder why I waited 9 years.

Sunday Stash March 8, 2026

No change in the numbers.

The center of the striped top is together.

Next comes the borders, which I’ll keep simple.  There’s a lot going on in the blocks.  I auditioned several striped fabrics, and it was chaos.  I’ll save those fabrics for another project.

I also picked the backing fabric, although I may be a little short.

March 2026 OMG

It’s time for a new monthly goal.

My focus quilt has been the striped orphan project.  I’m sewing the top together now.  I have one more column to add and borders.  I think I can get it basted for quilting too.

I’d love to finish the quilt this month but don’t think that’s doable.  There are several appointments and commitments in March which will limit my weekend sewing.  If I manage to start the quilting, it will be a good month.

To see all the other goals, visit Stories from the Sewing Room.

No fabric in this week.  Some of the striped fabric in the orphan box went into the fabric recycling bag.  There were pieces of questionable quality upholstery fabric I was never going to use.

I sewed the first column of the striped quilt together.

I made no effort to match seams.   I’m happy that the blocks were all about the same size.  I went into it thinking that might not be the case.  With two more columns to go, there is potential for a renegade.  I’m hoping to get the top done soon.

February OMG Update and Setting Limits

That felt like a fast month.

My February OMG was to make some blocks and move the striped quilt project forward.  I made 24 blocks total.

At 20 blocks, I laid them out to finalize the setting.  This was my original plan.

This is the setting I thought I would end up using.

After looking at both I realized I didn’t have near enough blocks to make either setting work.  I couldn’t muster enough enthusiasm to make many more blocks and didn’t have fabric for them either.

I settled on making four more blocks and will use this setting.  It’s a rough mock up, but I know where I’m heading.

To see what everyone did with their February goals, check out Stories from the Sewing Room.
