sicko

So, LiveJournal, how are you?

Today was a sick day for me, and so, for the first time in a looooong time, I find myself caught up on the internet and staring at the blank space of a new LJ entry.

It must be said: I hate sick days. I hate them. I hate them so much that I'd rather be sick on a weekend than be sick during the week and have to take a sick day. Is that the first symptom of being a workaholic? Actually, it's probably about the 12th sign of being a workaholic - I won't waste my time pretending that I'm not a bit of a workaholic.

So, while I feel not a single pang of guilt spending an entire weekend on the couch accomplishing nothing, today has been torture for me. But there has been one silver lining - at least I can stop feeling like a wuss for cutting my last work-out short. It's a relief to find that there was a good reason that I could barely walk on the treadmill, let alone run.

I've also become sure that (as I had always suspected) you CAN judge a book by it's cover. How do I know this? In all of my years of visiting the library, I have only ever really chosen books by their cover. Now that I'm reading books that are chosen by other people with adapting them for movies in mind, the quality of my reading material has plummeted. I promise you, I did a better job of choosing books by their covers than producers do by any means.

So now I'm left desperately hoping that my immune system, modern medicine and a minor miracle will combine to make me healthy by the time I wake up tomorrow. Knowing me, I'll be going in to work either way.

'tis the season

something tells me i've used that line before. probably for exactly the same reason i'm using it today. playoff season is here. hockey teams are winding up the regular season and gearing up for the post season -- and i'm preparing in my own way by mocking up my own little stanley cup.

actually, this one's not for me. this one will belong to my dad who won my playoff hockey pool last year and never received the trophy i promised him. i hope this one's worth the wait.

i'll be running the hockey pool again this year, and though i can't distribute an entry form until sunday when the final regular season game has been played and we know for once and for all who's made it in, i think i'll manage to keep myself busy. i'm hoping to figure out somewhere where i can host a web page that tracks everyone's progress in the pool. besides, i still have a stanley cup and a half to crochet. with any luck, this year's winner will get their award in a more timely fashion.

amo nutella

... at least I think that's how you'd say I love nutella in Italian (its country of origin)

I stopped on the way home last night at the grocery store and picked up (among other things) a bag of fresh French bread rolls. I bought them to use as sandwich rolls, but this morning as I wondered where the hell Amanda had gone, I was trying to come up with something to take to work for breakfast, and I remembered breakfast and the Lubino's when I was staying with them in Grenoble: crusty french bread + nutella. Why did I ever stop eating this?

Anyway, I popped the bread into the toaster oven when I got to work, slathered it with liberal amounts of nutella (those damned conservatives never use enough nutella) and ate up. Yum! I even managed to eat it without getting nutella all over my desk! I only got the gooey mess on one piece of paper -- I call that a huge success.

Not a bad start to this Friday morning.

EARTHQUAKE!!!

Woohoo! Ride the wave!

5.8! Whoa!

I've never been in an office building like this during an earthquake before. I've got to say, it's a bit different from the 6th floor!

close enough for gov't work?

dammit.

the state department's website is down. which means that i might not get registered for this sitting of the Foreign Service Officer Exam.

on one hand, DAMMIT.

on the other hand, it sits again in about 6 months, which would give me time to do all the reading i'd intended to do before this test. plus i'd have more time to write the freaking essay questions that are now part of the registration process. seriously, this thing has begun to look like a college application!

i guess we'll see if the site goes back up sometime today in time for me to write responses to 5 questions along the lines of such classics as: "list up to four (4) skills and qualifications you have and explain why they'd make you a good FSO", or "as a foreign service officer you will encounter many obstacles. please describe a challenge you have faced in the workplace and tell us how you dealt with."

is it bad that i'm kinda hoping the reg site doesn't work for the rest of the day? i'd get to sleep in on saturday!

ETA: I just took another look at the site. They're offering the test several times a year now, and the next testing window is November 1-8, 2008, so I'm thinking that would be a better time to take the test. (and this time i'll mark my calendar!)

slight change of plans

... or, well, a commitment to no plans at all.

I've been planning to take the Foreign Service Written Exam for a couple of months now, but somehow I convinced myself that the test date was in August. Not so, silly me, it's this Saturday. Luckily I can still register online up until 2 days before the test itself, so that's what I'll be doing tonight when I get home. And then I start reading.

I've taken this test before, but each time I've walked in knowing full well that I was unprepared. Unless we're counting Art History (I don't) I haven't taken a history course since high school. I took one macro-econ class. I've never studied business in my life. So this time I decided to take the test a little more seriously and actually do some reading before I take the test--I went on half.com and bought half a dozen of the books that are on the FSWE recommended reading list. The problem is that it's now been 5 years since I've studied for anything, and I haven't read a single one of those books. Oops!

So this week, I'm spending time on only 3 things: reading for the FSWE, knitting Mike's hat, and couch to 5k.

... at least that's the plan. There's book audaciously titled "A History of the Twentieth Century" in my knitting bag right now.

Oh! Which reminds me! I'm probably going to make a trip down to the hospital this weekend to drop of a hat and a card for Mike. If anyone would like to sign a card or would like me to take something with me, let me know.

slogans posted on the computer monitor where I'm temping:

I'M SMILING - That along should scare you

Back to your bridge you evil troll! You have not powers here.

For a good time call someone else

And your bullshit opinion would be?

A bit pissy today?

Did you eat a bowl of stupid for breakfast?

I'm sorry. My fault. I forgot you were an idiot.

A few clowns short of a circus now aren't we?

Hallelujah!

I'm sitting at the Panera in Santa Monica, and I HAVE MY COMPUTER BACK. About a hundred and twenty dollars later, my laptop is plugged in and working. Hurrah!

Now it's time for me to get all caught up on ... well, everything I guess. It's funny, I've been lamenting not having my computer for two weeks now, and now that it's back in front of me, all of the things I needed it so urgently for are slipping my mind. Damn.

grrrrrrr

so the apple store sent me to a place called computech to get my computer fixed. but they wanted $250. fuck that. for what they admitted was a $8 part and 40 minutes work, they wanted $250. why? because there are a lot of screws. i am more than a little pissed.
