Prospective Students

We’re glad you’re interested in joining QBE at Mines!

Want more details on the courses?  The Mines Catalog has details on what is required for the degree, see it here: https://catalog.mines.edu/graduate/programs/interdisciplinaryprograms/biology/#text

Wondering what requirements we have on prior coursework?  We don’t have a fixed requirement list on prior classes because as an interdisciplinary program we have students from a wide range of prior degrees! Part of our goal is to bring together students from a wide range of disciplines to prepare students for the multidisciplinary world of Quantitative Biosciences and Engineering. At a minimum, we suggest a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering or science in the diverse field of biology. We’ve had students from a range of backgrounds (chemistry, biology, math, electrical engineering, chemical engineering, environmental science) succeed – so you can, too. Some suggested skills to have before joining the program:

On the quantitative side – math background & coding experience.  If you’re from a program without extensive math or coding training, we suggest taking some courses (free or for credit) to get up to speed before starting in the program.  Students with some background in calculus, differential equations, and Python coding are well prepared.

On the biological side – fundamentals in biology and biochemistry.  Similar to above, if you don’t have prior experience with these areas, we suggest taking some courses (free or for credit) to get up to speed before starting in the program.
