We’re Canada’s Self-Storage Pioneers
Public Storage was founded in 1972 by Wayne Hughes and Ken Volk, pioneers who transformed how people manage their personal belongings. At a time when self-storage was uncommon, they recognized a growing need for safe, accessible storage solutions. What began as a single location in Southern California evolved into a multi-billion-dollar industry leader, with more than 3,000 locations across the United States.
Wayne Hughes’ vision extended beyond the U.S., driven in part by his strong connection to Canada. In 1979, Public Storage Canada opened its first location in Brampton, Ontario, marking the beginning of a new chapter. Originally established as a Canadian partnership affiliated with Public Storage USA, the company became fully independent in 2003 and has continued to grow ever since.
Today, Public Storage Canada operates more than 70 locations nationwide, with continued expansion underway. The company employs hundreds of Canadians and reinvests millions annually into local communities and the Canadian economy.
