Our Test Prep Approach

Preparing for the SAT or ACT can feel overwhelming when you don't have a clear plan. At Private Prep, we help students work smarter by teaching them to practice with purpose rather than merely covering material. Our approach combines data-driven strategies with Performance Prep techniques that help students clear the noise and focus on what matters most.

Practice with Purpose

Our methodology is personalized and thoughtfully designed to address test trends and individual learning styles, with strategies developed by analyzing thousands of student outcomes. Our approach helps students focus on the different skills needed to succeed.

Confidence Under Pressure

Our test prep curriculum incorporates our Performance Prep tools to teach mindfulness, motivation, and stress management to help students stay calm under pressure. Our tutors provide a focused, clear, customized process to help students get the most out of their prep time.

A Commitment to Success

We hire and support educators who share a deep commitment to helping our students succeed. Not only do we help students increase test scores, but we also help them build confidence and develop valuable learning skills that last a lifetime.

Results You Can Trust

We diligently track student progress and assess outcomes, giving us data to share with families throughout their test prep journey.

How We Measure Success: Percent of Points Captured

Each new student takes an initial diagnostic test. We analyze the number of points between their starting diagnostic score and a perfect score to determine the "points available to capture." This diagnostic approach allows us to provide families with a realistic range of results that students, on average, earn through our program.

ACT Results:

48% of points captured

When students take their first real ACT

56% of points captured

When students take multiple ACTs

SAT Results:

38% of points captured

When students take their first real SAT

45% of points captured

When students take their second real SAT

Please note: These figures represent average results across our student community. Individual outcomes depend on commitment, preparation, and personal circumstances.

Performance Prep

More than a decade ago, we partnered with sports psychologists to develop our Performance Prep program.

Today, it is incorporated into all the test prep services we offer and personalized to each student, teaching them to mentally prepare for performing under pressure.

Manage Test-Day Stress

Evidence-based strategies help students stay calm and focused when it matters most, reducing anxiety that can impact performance.

Build Lasting Confidence

Students develop mental resilience and self-assurance that extends beyond test day to all high-pressure academic situations.

Focus When It Matters

Students learn to clear the noise and concentrate on the task at hand, even in challenging testing environments.

Develop a Growth Mindset

Research-backed techniques help students embrace challenges and view preparation as a path to improvement, not just a hurdle to overcome.

How Our Test Prep Process Works

At Private Prep, we take the choice between the SAT and ACT seriously and have developed a comprehensive diagnostic approach to determine which test is best for each student. Our process helps students focus their energy on the test where they can achieve their highest scores.

01

INTAKE

We take time to understand each student's academic background, goals, testing timeline, and any learning differences that may affect preparation.

02

DIAGNOSTICS

Students take full-length diagnostic tests for both the SAT and ACT. We analyze results using our custom diagnostic analysis tool, discuss with students how each test felt and which path they feel more confident taking, then combine analysis and discussion to make a final recommendation. We believe each student should have agency in the process.

03

PERSONALIZED PLAN

We create a customized preparation plan identifying specific improvement areas and establishing a strategic timeline to test day.

04

IMPLEMENTATION

Through lessons, homework, and practice tests, we gather both qualitative and quantitative feedback on student performance, allowing us to adapt to each student's needs in real time.

05

ONGOING COMMUNICATION

You'll receive lesson summaries, progress reports, and practice test analysis throughout the process, so you are always up to date on progress.
