The Pinellas Talking Book Library is a free service to residents of all ages who are unable to read standard print material due to visual, physical, or learning disabilities, whether permanent or temporary.  The Pinellas Talking Book Library provides recorded audio, Braille and large print books and magazines, as well as a collection of descriptive videos to residents of Pinellas and Sarasota counties.

The Pinellas Talking Book Library is administered locally through the Pinellas Public Library Cooperative.

Through a partnership with the National Library Service (NLS) and the Library of Congress, books and magazines in audio formats and Braille, plus compatible playback equipment are loaned free of charge. All materials are sent and returned via the United States Postal Service with postage-free mail. The library collection has thousands of titles to choose from in fiction and non-fiction, pre-school to adult.

Everyone has a right to accessible library services. The Pinellas Talking Book Library circulates free accessible audio and braille reading material to those Pinellas and Sarasota County residents with a visual or print disability, as well as performs robust outreach to those in need, provides high quality customer service, conducts reader advisory, and serves as an informational resource so patrons may live full and independent lives through access to information and library materials.

Through distinguished and dignified service, those who see differently will have equitable access to information and literature.

Tips for Using Your Talking Book Service

💡 Tip 1 — Keep your address up to date. If you move, call or write to tell us your new address. Let us know if you want to stop or start getting books in the mail.

💡 Tip 2 — Report damaged cartridges. If a digital cartridge does not work, find the return mail label. In the top left corner, check the box marked “Damaged.”

💡 Tip 3 — Send notes separately. Do not put notes inside returned books. To be sure we get your message, send it in its own envelope or call the library.

History

The Pinellas Talking Book Library (TBL) was first administered and housed through PPLC in 1992 and opened to public in May 1993. Today, through a partnership with the National Library Service (NLS) and the Library of Congress, TBL serves eligible Pinellas County residents at no cost to the local community. In 2008, a contractual agreement was established for TBL to provide services to eligible Sarasota County residents as well.

The Talking Book Library is partially funded under the provisions of the State Aid to Libraries Grant program, administered by the Florida Department of State’s Division of Library and Information Services.
