In order to delete multiple letters, do a swift long swipe as you would for deleting a character and hold the finger down at the end of the swipe. If you hold the gesture, after a while, it will delete entire words instead of characters. If you want to go back to deleting single characters to be more precise, you can swipe back the other way.
